Leaders of the Islamist rebel fighters who ousted the dictator Bashar al-Assad have suspended parliament and the constitution. They said the move was necessary in order to ensure a smooth transition of power. However a spokesman for the rebels said the country’s religious and cultural diversity would not be threatened.
