The Partially Examined Life is a podcast by some guys who were at one point set on doing philosophy for a living but then thought better of it. Each episode, we pick a short text and chat about it with some balance between insight and flippancy. You don't have to know any philosophy, or even to have read the text we're talking about to (mostly) follow and (hopefully) enjoy the discussion. For links to the texts we discuss and other info, check out www.partiallyexaminedlife.com. We also featu ...

Hello my name is Connor. I would like to talk to you about philosophy. I am not an academic. I’m not studying at university or night school. I am learning about philosophy because it makes me be better in general and it gives me interesting questions to use my clever on. Alternative Philosophy is all about accessible philosophy, this topic seems so academic and disconnected from everyday life. I've found it is practical and helpful on a daily basis so I'm keen to share that outlook.

Being a human is tricky. There are any number of unwritten rules and social cues that we have to learn as we go, but that we ultimately learn to take for granted. Camilla Pang, who was diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder at age eight, had a harder time than most, as she didn’t easily perceive the rules of etiquette and relationships that we nee…

The latest trend for philosophers in the modern era seems to be self loathing. Except it's not philosophy. It's self loathing. Stop it. Be better than your emotions and bias. Thi is a philosopher of games, making him a perfect match for this podcast. Why are games worthy of philosophical study? What counts as a game, anyway? We play a frustration game, finish each others’ sentences, and ask dumb questions on a museum tour. It’s an unusually discussion-focused episode! Picture is by Zahra, grabbed from this article. More at philosophytalk.org/shows/art-non-violence.We all hope for peace. Yet in the face of violence, it often seems the only recourse is more violence. Advocates of non-violence claim it’s not necessary to respond to war in kind, and that responding violently, even in self-defense, just perpetuates the cycle of violence. So how can we practice non…

Introduction Given the choice, who wouldn’t increase the balance in their bank account, switch into a fit and healthy body, find themselves in a meaningful career, and cultivate happiness and love in their relationships? These are preferences we all share, but few of us achieve them. Perhaps we could, if only we made better choices. We all want to …

The nature-nurture debates inform almost every area of human life – from biology and botany to economics, literature, and history. To simplify, thinkers on the nature side have, in varying ways, argued that at least parts of your body and mind are behind an impenetrable skin, cannot be gotten to by upbringing, education, politics, or culture. In this episode, I discuss how the New Testament writings (and other extra-biblical sources) provide evidence that the New Testament authors wrote reliable, eyewitness accounts of the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus. In this episode, we read Jean-Paul Sartre's Search for a Method. Can the concept of the nation be a resource for liberatory political struggle? Are the dangers of nationalism simply too great? In Creolizing the Nation (Northwestern UP, 2020), Kris F. What is religion? What does it mean to be religious? How do we justify our religious beliefs?
