Artificial intelligence is evolving at an unprecedented pace—what does that mean for the future of technology, venture capital, business, and even our understanding of ourselves? Award-winning journalist and writer Anil Ananthaswamy joins us for our latest episode to discuss his latest book Why Machines Learn: The Elegant Math Behind Modern AI . Anil helps us explore the journey and many breakthroughs that have propelled machine learning from simple perceptrons to the sophisticated algorithms shaping today’s AI revolution, powering GPT and other models. The discussion aims to demystify some of the underlying math that powers modern machine learning to help everyone grasp this technology impacting our lives, even if your last math class was in high school. Anil walks us through the power of scaling laws, the shift from training to inference optimization, and the debate among AI’s pioneers about the road to AGI—should we be concerned, or are we still missing key pieces of the puzzle? The conversation also delves into AI’s philosophical implications—could understanding how machines learn help us better understand ourselves? And what challenges remain before AI systems can truly operate with agency? If you enjoy this episode, please subscribe and leave us a review on your favorite podcast platform. Apologies for the somewhat variable release schedule for the podcast. January has been pretty busy, and unfortunately that busyness spilled over into February and the school holidays. But today, at long last, I have a few hours to myself to record a podcast and play the playlist that has been sitting and waiting since the first week of the year. Keeping with the theme, I’m also trying out a pair of varifocal glasses. So while I have some sort of notes for today’s show, I can’t really read them very well, so this is very much off the cuff. [00:20] RADICAL KITTEN – Never On Time [06:15] Dead Married – Alone [12:27] Swiss Portrait – Always [17:06] hidden driver – Whitman St Blues [22:24] Rustycore – Buick [26:06] Demonic Sweaters – The Precipice of Me Unless otherwise noted, all tracks are released under Creative Commons licences. It’s Hogmanay! The detritus of Christmas surrounds us. The last few crackers are left unpulled, a few lonely boxes of chocolates are still to be eaten, and we soon must deal with the looming bells of the New Year. All of which means that it is time for the Edinburgh Man end of year show 2023! The 25 tracks, as picked by your erstwhile host as being the best of all the music (or at least all the creative commons music) played on the show over the last twelve(ish) months. I’m hiding away as I record this week’s show – ostensibly the Christmas episode of the podcast. I’ve gone and left it too late and I now need to record the episode on the Saturday before Christmas, i.e. the first day the kids are off school. They are already at each other’s throats and starting to get very annoyed by my continued asking when they are going back to school. Anyway, many thanks for listening to the return of the show over the last few months. I’m sort of getting used to doing these again, and for the most part they are weekly-ish. Hopefully next week (sometime between Christmas and New Year) I’ll be able to squeeze in a best of 2023 show. But until then, Merry Christmas! [00:48] Slughole – Buried in the Snow (…My Mind) [06:30] Rotundos – Moving Day [11:05] Far Apart – Hazel [17:57] calostro – Vino [20:58] Mom’s Home – good at first dates [26:52] Dating – Supercollider Unless otherwise noted, all tracks are released under Creative Commons licences. Aye, the nights are fair drawing in up here in Edinburgh – sunset is something crazy like half past three in the afternoon. The photo accompanying today’s show was taken while me and Thing 2 walked home from school today. Regular listeners will no doubt remember than Friday is a half day for the schools in Edinburgh, so even though this photo was taken at 12.30pm, the fuzzy lukewarm glare just above the trees is actually the sun. On today’s show jangly shambling Christmas music from Sheffield, punk from Spain, shoegaze from Australia, and some brilliant downtempo surf rock from Columbus, Ohio’s Vietnam II on netlabel blocSonic. [00:38] SHRUB – 12 Days of Shrubmas [06:25] ZUTATEN – Mancuerna [11:55] Angelo Celli – point of you [14:43] keep it together – Power Lines [20:40] Pine Point – Old Dog/New Socks [27:43] Vietnam II – Cargo (I Search Through the Night) Unless otherwise noted, all tracks are released under Creative Commons licences. Urgh, I have a cold. That’s the excuse I’m going for as to why the show has been delayed for a week or two. It’s absolutely not because I was spending all my free time catching up on three seasons of Doctor Who before the 60th anniversery specials started. No it’s not that at all. On today’s show, mostly new tracks from releases that have been featured over the last few months. In one case it’s because the track is a wee bit festive, and in other cases it’s because they are great tracks that I wanted to play! There’s also a new track from a fantastic new album “Lost Dogs” by keep it together on Seattle’s friend’s house records. [00:20] The Cosmonautopolitans – Mistletoe [04:29] Ballsy – Be Your Baby [08:41] keep it together – Dashcam [14:21] Shiv and the Carvers – Heart in a Jar [17:46] Libby Quinn – Jesus in Tokyo [23:36] Tossing Seed – Fall of Sweet Pea Unless otherwise noted, all tracks are released under Creative Commons licences. It’s the three hundredth podcast! Except it’s not, because I’ve always been fast and loose with the numbering. It’s probably more like number 350, but let’s pretend for a moment and bask in having reached this numeric milestone. In keeping with previous significant numbered episodes, very little extra work has gone into this one. Although this time, it’s a double length show. A mixure of both new releases and classic podcast favs. All creative commons licensed. Some even on vinyl. I had hoped for this to be a live show, but I’ve not quite got the live server running, so it’s prerecorded. Also, I used a creaky old iPad and some creaky old iPad softare, so the audio quality is… meh. Many apologies for that. I’ve had to run some extra compression in it too to even out the volume. So it’s probably going to sound like a badly tuned FM radio. But what else would you expect! [00:38] The Westerwaves – Penguin Pop [06:54] Keel Her – Riot Grrrl [11:27] Grrrl Gang – A Fight Breaks Out At A Karaoke Bar [14:41] Trust Fund – Cut me out [20:26] Home Front – Nation [23:55] Radiator Hospital – Fireworks [28:41] Low Pines – Heavy Hander [32:32] North Bloom – Rockstar, baby [37:48] Schwervon – Truth Teller [41:33] Pine Point – Say it Again [46:29] Townhouse Woods – Cricket Hymn, Part I [51:00] mmmarkos – Motion [57:34] Swearin’ – Kenosha Unless otherwise noted, all tracks are released under Creative Commons licences. I was showing my work colleague some new photo management software I’ve been using, and I shared an album with him. “Why would someone have so many photos of coffee?” I mean, it’s probably a legitimate question. But my feeling is – why not? I’m sure about 50% of the images that I use for this podcast are coffee related, and if they aren’t then it’s time to up my game. I’m feeling nicely caffeinated as I write this due to a new coffee grinder, which is much easier on this old man’s arm than the hand crank version. However not sufficiently caffeinated for this to be a live podcast. I’ve been experimenting with doing live shows again, and have even set up a site at live.edinburghman.com. However after spending half an hour fighting with and losing to streaming software, it just a normal pre-recorded show. Good music though! [00:22] Bris – Errautsiko dira hiriak [06:54] Noah Roth – Hold On / Okay [13:03] ELLiS·D – I Want You To Know [19:29] Waylon Thornton and the Heavy Hands – Broom Rider [22:56] entertainment for the braindead – An Answer [30:33] The Dream Is Dead – Death Of A Superstar Unless otherwise noted, all tracks are released under Creative Commons licences. Apologies for the lack of podcast last week. The all new Edinburgh Man Towers is still, very slowly, being decorated and upgraded since we moved in over a year ago. Last week it was the turn of the Dining Room / Office / Music Listening Room to be rewired. The biggest room in the house, and room with the most stuff. All of which had to be cleared out for the work. Of course, while the room was empty we thought it would be a good time to lay a new floor. By ourselves. So that was last weekend’s fun, and I’m still not really recovered. I’d love to say that you can’t tell, and that this week’s show is the pinnacle of professionalism, but you know… [00:32] Final Passion – Perpetual Motion [09:11] Hard Femme – The Car That Kills Me [14:34] Collate – Erika’s Trip [20:41] Shiv and the Carvers – Brat [25:12] Trip Westerns – Free Mind [30:45] Nodding by the Fire – Where the hills are fog Unless otherwise noted, all tracks are released under Creative Commons licences. One of the most important things when it comes to making a podcast is planning. Planning. Not something that this show has much of. But not this time, this time the show was actually planned. Anticipating the fact that this week was the Edinburgh schools October holidays, your erstwhile host recorded the show last week, so all I had to do was write these notes and upload the show. The final point was touch and go for a while, but once the kids were occupied with playing videos games I managed to squeeze in just enough time to scribble this nonsense and hit publish. On today’s show, indie folk from Rhode Island and Chile, indie-rock from Indonesia, post-punk from Edinburgh, and more. Track 1 is not released under a CC licence and is included with kind permission of PK Bats. [00:50] PK Bats – I Witnessed a Drowning [04:59] Grrrl Gang – Cool Girl [09:54] Mouni – Child [14:12] Gone – Buried [20:21] victoriaflores – me hace desaparecer [26:02] Nadalands – The Five Stages of Petroleum Processing Tracks 2-6 are released under Creative Commons licences. Back in the cupboard for today’s podcast. It’s still a wee bit cramped in here, but the acoustics are hopefully better. Let me know if it sounds good, bad or indifferent. You can get in touch with the show on social media via Mastodon (it’s pretty much only Mastodon now) at @edinburgh_man@mastodon.scot On today’s show it’s another genre spanning world tour with anarcho hardcore punk from Arkansas, shoegaze from Brighton in the UK, post-punk from Indonesia, and art-rock from Oregon. [00:51] DryerFire – Brainrot [04:48] The Marble Tea – Parchment [08:43] Wine Pride – Nostalgia [13:39] War Fighters – Burdens Piled Feat Rafif Taufani [18:52] Collate – The Product [23:56] Far Apart – Dartmouth All tracks released under Creative Commons licences.
