Whatup fam, Today I had on First Light Farms founder, Jason Ross who we call “Jace.” If you're into high-quality top-notch grass-fed beef, I’m sure you’re already a fan of First Light. A brand that can be found in Bristol Farms, Lassens, and tons of other natural grocers, and now even at Ralph’s in some areas. With some of the top cuts in the world found in their Steak Club and just a few of some of the highest-end steak restaurants in the world. First Light Farms was founded by Jason and a couple of friends frustrated with the traditional meat value chain. They had cut their teeth in the industry and were unhappy with the lack of transparency and the commodity mindset. They also identified a problem they thought they could solve – beef with the consistency, tenderness, and succulence of grain-fed, raised on grass without any nasty and unhealthy inputs. So Jason and his friends set about inventing 100% grass-fed wagyu beef, and they created a value chain to seamlessly connect consumers who care, with groups of like-minded farmers. Guys, there’s a reason why Forbes calls it the best beef in the world. If you’re someone who’s interested in regenerative farming, conscious consumerism or perhaps just the best freaking steak in the world, we got it all in this episode! And hey if you get value from the show please share it with a friend, tag me on social and definitely subscribe. It means the world to me. I appreciate you spending your time with us. Enjoy the show! Show notes as a general guide below. Somewhat in order and not written in perfect grammar because we want you to actually listen to the show! Jason’s last oh shit moment Jason and First Light’s commitment to the ethical raising of cattle, commitment to quality and regenerative farming practices. Was there a time for you in the past when the ethical raising of animals didn’t even cross your mind or has this been a thing for you since you were a young kid? Commodity grass-fed vs growing to order. American history on glyphosate. How do you see this situation in an analogous way when it comes to grain-fed animals and the way animals are raised for consumption in the US? Is this a cultural thing? Where did we go wrong in America? At what point does America start mass-producing food? Corn subsidies. Cheap and cheerful production. Re-emergence of grass-fed. Tell us about First Light Farms. What is it and why did you create it? In large cities, farmers are basically people that live in our imaginations, what are your family of farmers actually like? What is your relationship with them and how much do they care about your practices vs just making money? Equitable distribution of value in the chain. Wagyu Vs Kobe beef. What is the life cycle of cattle that is pasture-raised and grass-fed vs that of grain-fed cattle? Why is grass-fed so expensive? There is a lot of talk about Venison and other game animals. Can you share a bit about game animals from a nutritional standpoint and also from an environmental standpoint? I love learning about regenerative farming. Give us your definition of it. Why is regenerative farming being talked about so much as one of the solutions to our ecological crisis? Meat consumption plays a big role in environmental impact. What is your take on this? Sabina Bhatia is an accomplished Leader and customer champion tirelessly fighting for the financial wellness of every American worker. As a Chief Customer Officer at Payactiv, she acts as a daily advocate and amplifier for the needs of thousands of corporate clients and millions of lower-income workers. After 20 years in Wall Street Sabina has been instrumental in building the financial category of Earned Wage Access which is a super interesting concept that we get into in the podcast. Think of hourly wage earners having access to the money they’ve earned for the hours they just completed the previous day without waiting for a paycheck. Sabina is a member of the Conscious Capitalism Senior Leadership Network. She is also a MENTOR for Girls on the Run, a certified skydiver, a 5-time marathon runner, and a 2-century bike rider. Pretty sick right? This interview taught me about a category that I didn’t even know existed and can be a major catalyst for the solution of a widening gap between the lower-income hourly wage earner and the high-income part of the population. I hope you enjoy the show, also have you subscribed yet? If you enjoy Conscious Profits Unfiltered please show me some love with a little review action and more importantly share it with a friend or on your Insta story or wherever form of support you choose I will be extremely grateful for it. Thanks, guys and again enjoy the show! Show notes in order of appearance: Sabina’s last oh shit moment Seb reads off several awards that Sabina’s company has achieved in the past 5 years. What is the most unconscious or least purpose-driven thing that you did as a young girl or woman? Sabina is on the Conscious Capitalism Senior Leadership program, a mentor for Girls on the Run, a certified skydiver, a 5-time marathon runner, and a 2-century bike rider. What is gnarlier the marathon or the century bike ride? At what point in your life did you decide that profit should go hand in hand with purpose? Tipping and bad service. Payactiv is based on the concept of Earned Wage Access and Sabina has been involved with its expansion since 2012 Sabina explains EWA. Examples of real life users. Real life examples of a company using EWA for its employees. How is the company benefitting? Payactiv is a B Corp. What are the main pillars that have helped you guys become a B Corp? How is a fintech company sustainable? When do you believe that the label Certified B Corporation will become mainstream and will it ever? We are experiencing massive inflation. This is due to money printing and it seems as though the gap between low-income people and households and high-income households is significantly widening. What do you see as the solution to this serious problem? Many people today and especially since the pandemic are experiencing financial stress. They live paycheck to paycheck or one paycheck behind which gets them into debt. What is the #1 thing that you recommend they do first? Val is the CEO and founder of Spray Valet. A business that innovates the way people are spray-tanned while ensuring their clients feel more confident. Val however, is also an intuitive energetic healer. In fact, this is her true calling and something that she discovered by operating her conscious business, Spray Valet. She can see where a soul is at, where it wants to go, and what is blocking it from getting there. She mixes the spiritual with practical, so everything feels tangible, bringing the power back into your hands to have you let go of all limitations that are stopping you from fully accessing all of your life. Hope you love it as much as I did! I honestly had a great time interviewing Val. She’s such a unique soul that discovered her path through a conscious business. This is actually the opposite of how most people experience it or view it, where it starts with Finding soul purpose first and THEN business. Really epic and fun interview. Show notes in order of appearance: Val’s last oh shit moment We’re gonna talk about Val’s Mobile Spray Tanning biz and its conscious business aspects but we’re also going to talk about Val’s very unique skills of energy healing and your power to see and sense spirits. Val is the most nonspiritual spiritual person. What in the world are you actually doing? Val looks at the world as a cake and breaks out ingredients and layers. Who is Val’s True Self? Are we all the same true selves? It’s a formula. Like Science. Use 9 different intuitions? When will the pandemic end? A premonition. How to decipher between fear and intuition. Strengthening intuition like a muscle. When did you start seeing the world as energy layers? When did you decide to start a business from this? Did you feel any kind of shame for charging people for your energy healing capabilities? When you go on a date, are you just shooting yourself right into the person’s energy field and picking out their insecurities and strengths? What exactly is Spray Valet and mobile tanning. Sebastian loves a tan. Something about a tan that exudes beauty and confidence in a human being. Why the heck is that? Holding it together through a tan. How is it that you connect with women in a vulnerable state through your business? How do you instill your core values into the company? How are all stakeholders benefited? Val does a live reading on Seb Val shares her top two traits for a conscious leader to embody.
