日本の楽器の中でも最も親しまれている存在。 なお、略字として「筝」や同じく「こと」と読む「琴」の字も箏に対して使われることがある。 中国から伝来したもので、１３弦が標準。 これとは別に７弦の琴（キン）や６弦の和琴（やまとごと/ワゴン）がある。 一般に１３本の弦は同じ太さのものを使用し、箏柱（ことじ）と呼ばれる可動式のブリッジを立てて曲ごとに調弦し、右手の三本の指に爪をはめて演奏する。 雅楽の中では管絃の一部として合奏用に用いていたが、その後、寺院歌謡の伴奏などを経て、江戸時代に盛んに独奏が行われるようになった。 近世の箏曲の創始者として八橋検校が有名で、生田流、山田流などの流派が存在する。 三味線や尺八(かつては胡弓も)との合奏も盛んに行われている。 明治以降次々と新曲も生まれ、大正時代以降は、低音用の十七絃や、音域を拡げた二十絃、二十五絃、三十絃などの箏も考案されている。
