Nova Scotia Government U.S.-Style Authoritarianism in Favour of Fracking 47:41

NS, under Premier Tim Houston, is trying to enact measures such as: - Limiting media access to elected leaders. - Giving the government the power to fire civil servants without cause. - Making it harder to find out what the government is up to via access to information requests. - Making it impossible to propose amendments at a government committee formerly called Law Amendments. - Lifting bans on fracking and uranium mining (without consulting the Assembly of Nova Scotia Mi’kmaw Chiefs), protections adopted after consultation and engagement with Nova Scotians and backed by health and economic research. - Giving the government the power to appoint 50% of the Board of Governors of Nova Scotia universities and requiring universities to align their funding priorities with that of the government: a threat to the independence of academic institutions in the province. The interview also comes after moves to enable the government to fire the Auditor General without cause and to hide the Auditor’s findings from the public were yanked recently. It’s the same approach we are seeing in the U.S. itself to centralizing power and is reminiscent of the approach of the Government in Alberta as well. But resistance to this approach by the provincial government is strong. Over 500 people subsequently joined a rally for democracy , organized by various groups from labour organizations and unions to environmental groups including Sierra Club Canada, that was held in Halifax to push back. PBO Emissions Cap Report is Flawed: Another Parliamentary Budget Officer Report Misses the Mark 11:33

The PBO emissions cap report is as ridiculous as a report on the costs to the economy of requiring seat belts in cars that does not account for any of the benefits of having seat belts in cars. It also comes as ultra-rich corporations in the U.S. are being given free reign to pollute as much as they like. Canada can, and must, be different – for practical and economic reasons. Most Canadians (65 per cent) agree that Canada should invest in renewable energy instead of fossil fuel developments. A majority of Canadians (62 per cent) agree that Canada should maintain its climate commitments independent of the United States administration’s decisions, including its withdrawal from the UN Paris Agreement on climate. - As of March 10th, 2025 according to polling by Leger . We must not lose the progress we have made in reducing corporate pollution. The Office of the Parliamentary Budget Officer ( PBO ) report on the emissions cap is out and we outline it’s flaws in this week's podcast episode. We discuss food security lessons from personal experiences in the Yukon and, on an unrelated note, share the audio version of our past webinar with the Yukon Conservation Society on their Yukon South Beringia Priority Place initiative. The Priority Place spans 89,000 square kilometers between the Ogilvie Mountains to the north and Dezadeash Lake and Carcross to the south. Because it was never (or only occasionally) glaciated during the ice ages, it is home to some of the oldest landscapes in Canada and contains a variety of unique and endemic species, some of which are found nowhere else on Earth. For anyone concerned about how climate change will impact our ability to feed ourselves we share some advice on how to make our food systems more resilient in the second half of today's episode. Thanks to the oil and gas CEOs behind the coming U.S. Administration tariffs might be coming soon to a Canadian economic sector near you, but likely oil and gas itself will be exempt from tariffs (no surprise there). Meanwhile an emissions cap on oil and gas corporations could save thousands of Canadian lives through air pollution reductions alone and the cap will NOT hurt Canada's oil and gas competitiveness.
