Are Kernicterus Attorneys Necessary in Spring Hill, Indiana?
Many things about Kernicterus are important for you to understand, including why you require legal representation. The first thing you should know is that it is a rare but potentially fatal condition that affects children born to mothers who have the Rh disease. If untreated, this illness can seriously harm the brain. Kernicterus may result in death or very serious developmental disabilities. The most common cause of kernicterus in newborns is hyperbilirubinemia, which occurs when a mother's bilirubin levels are high during pregnancy. Food is broken down and nutrients are absorbed with the aid of a fluid called bile. As the liver breaks down bile, bilirubin is a waste product that is produced.
Both the urine and the stool contain it, and it is typically stored in the bloodstream. If there is insufficient bilirubin in a baby's blood, bilirubin accumulates in the body. The mother's health issues, a lack of breast milk, improper breast milk storage, or an infection are just a few possible causes. Jaundice may occur in a newborn who has elevated bilirubin levels. The skin and whites of the eyes become yellow when someone has jaundice. Bilirubin builds up in the bloodstream if bilirubin levels in the blood rise to an unhealthy level because the liver is no longer producing enough bile to counteract this.
How many kernicterus cases exist?
One in every 40,000 babies born in the US suffers from the rare but severe birth injury known as kernicterus. Severe hyperbilirubinemia, or an excessively high level of bilirubin in the blood, manifests itself in the form of kernicterus. Red blood cells are colored by a substance called bilirubin. The liver produces it, and it is typically present in very small amounts in the blood. A significant amount of brain damage, particularly to the brainstem, can result when bilirubin levels exceed a predetermined threshold. Exact causes of this are unknown.
Incompatibility with Rh is the most frequent cause. Every year in the US, one in 40,000 newborns suffers from kernicterus. Accordingly, there are roughly 7,400 new kernicterus cases reported annually. One week after birth, 3,500 of these infants pass away. The only way to prevent kernicterus is to give the baby a blood exchange transfusion once it has already developed. Kernicterus has no known treatments. Blood from donors is used to replace the baby's blood that is taken. The term "exchange transfusion" refers to this procedure.
