KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • The story was written by Sally a long time ago when her now 22-year-old son was 3. He was a very hyper verbal, intelligent boy with an expansive vocabulary. She was in bed-rest while pregnant with her daughter. This was quite a big adjustment and he started stuttering. I wrote the story for him to help him through that time in his life when things weren’t normal and to teach him some patience, self-acceptance as well as optimism and hope that he’d get through this and be fine.
  • I already had experience with work with children in my professional life, so I was familiar with disfluency, saw it unfolding and got him the help that he needed really early on. It also came in handy that my sister is a speech and language pathologist, so between her, I and the therapy he was receiving from another speech and language pathologist, all that intervention did the trick. He’s made a full recovery since.
  • While the story was written about my son and disfluency it transcends that. I simply talked about a “struggle” that the child is having, so it’s useful for lots of different kids with lots of situations that can arise. The take-home message is: You’re unconditionally loved whether you’re making a mistake or doing things just right and everything in between. It’s a nurturing, fun way to make an emotional connection with your child and let they know they’re unconditionally loved which is an important message for any child to hear.
  • The co-creation has been as fulfilling as any other part of this project. It’s been a labour of love, but in the most lovely way. It’s been a highlight of my life in the last couple of years, jumping on Zoom calls with Rebecca and others at World Game-Changers. You’re bringing a children’s book to life with fanciful words and illustrations, how could that not bring a smile to your face?

BEST MOMENTS

‘Like anything with children, early intervention is the key to turning things around.’
‘The book was a way of having a special connection with my son to let him know that it’s OK, we’re going to work through this.’
‘I’ve always found writing to be very cathartic and healing – writing and making soup!’
‘In writing this story the three of us have talked about the importance of the parent or grownup raising a child to be a model and shaping a child’s behaviour by modelling appropriate behaviour.’

ABOUT THE GUESTS

Rebecca is an artist and designer based in the South of England. She graduated from Kingston University in London 2013 with a degree in Illustration and Animation. After a shift in direction and new challenge working as a lifeguard and in management in the leisure industry, she went travelling around the world through South East Asia, Australia and New Zealand. She returned to the UK, to begin a journey working commercially in art and design.

Rebecca works together with people to create logos, help with branding, design or re-vamp websites and generally loves to get involved with creative projects. She works across all industries and loves listening to people and understanding what their business is about, why they do what they do and translating this into a form of visual communication. Rebecca is a seeker of the spiritual and inspired by the power and beauty in nature; from colour, form and pattern, to how we can look to nature as a guide and teacher in life.

As an educational & behavioral consultant, Sally has worked with dozens of school districts since the mid-90’s, helping them integrate principles of Applied Behavior Analysis into classrooms. Sally also works privately for families, equipping parents with effective, evidence-based strategies, and helping them optimize their parenting skills to get back to enjoying time together.

With 28 years of experience working in the field of autism and special education, her approach has remained simple – she believes in maintaining a positive mindset, creating partnerships with a purpose, and always striving for significant outcomes for children.

Currently, Sally contracts privately with both school districts and families across the country through her company – Dynamic Behavior Solutions. She’s especially enjoying helping families with “neurotypical” little ones who just need some extra help getting back on track behaviorally.
