In this inaugural episode of Speaking Globally, host Major Gen (Ret) Walter Givhan introduces himself and speaks with Lt. Gen (Ret) John Bradley of the Lamia Afghan Foundation.

Bradley distinguished himself in war and peace as a courageous and compassionate leader. During his 41 years of service in the Air Force, Bradley served as Commander of the United States Air Force Reserve Command and flew fighter aircraft, including 337 combat missions in Vietnam.

In 2008 Bradley and his wife Jan founded the Lamia Afghan foundation after a fateful meeting with an Afghan girl who exemplified the spark and promise of equal opportunity in the country.

Today marks three years since the Russian invasion of Ukraine began. We're talking with Stephen Humphreys, who is about to travel back to Ukraine for the 12th time in that span. After the Battle of Irpin (February 2022), a turning point in the Kyiv offensive during the Russian invasion, Humphreys decided to go to Ukraine, to offer assistance. Since then, Humphreys, an attorney, has worked on war crimes investigations, volunteered in training Ukrainian armed forces, and taught law and history at the Taras Shevchenko National University in Kyiv. In his time in Ukraine, Humphreys has taken photographs documenting the people, cities, and landscapes as they are now, war-torn yet bonded together and resilient amidst incredible destruction. Today's conversation is about the substantial role of women as both fighters and negotiators in conflicts around the globe. Host Walter Givhan is joined by Troy University professor Dr. Alexis Henshaw to discuss this often overlooked aspect of war that leaves her asking, "Where are the women?" Henshaw is the author of Why Women Rebel: Understanding Women’s Participation in Armed Rebel Groups and co-author of Insurgent Women: Female Combatants in Civil Wars. She has authored reports for the U.S. Army's Peacekeeping and Stability Operations Institute and the Centre for Women, Peace, and Security at the London School of Economics. Clem holds the MA and PhD from Columbia University, in geography, with a concentration in Soviet studies. A geographer, he is the co-editor of seven books, including, most recently, Political Geographies of the Post-Soviet Union. He also frequently publishes blog posts, recently concentrated on Russia, Ukraine, and international security issues. Clem has testified on over 75 occasions as an expert witness in United States Immigration Courts in matters involving asylum-seekers from Russia, Ukraine, Belarus, Kazakhstan, and Uzbekistan.
