In the latest edition of the show, Gideon attempts to rally the nursing community to mount a cohesive response against the American Medical Association's call for greater oversight over nonphysician providers, such as nurse practitioners and physician assistants. The Nursing community must fight for respect and recognition as KEY stakeholders in healthcare. Current ANA's President Dr. Jennifer Mensik-Kennedy insisting that “At the end of the day, the licensing and regulation of APRNs do not and have never required the oversight of state medical boards. U.S. nursing regulatory bodies have the authority and oversight because they understand the practice and principles of nursing to ensure that competent nursing care is provided by licensed nurses." On this episode, Gideon makes an appeal for the retirement of the title "Midlevel." The words we choose and the language we use have the power to move the people and the world around us. Words represent beliefs, morals, prejudices, and principles—sometimes in ways that shape an audience's perceptions. The nursing community must insist on the proper title for a nurse practitioner and must persist in this fight to make change permanent. Take a listen and share your thoughts. On this episode of The Nurse Gideon Angle , the host discusses the issue of nurse-to-patient ratio from a federal regulation and recommendation standpoint as well as from the viewpoints of supporters and opposers. Gideon then offers the nurse who constantly deals with suboptimal nurse-to-patient ratios to manage the guilt and frustration appropriately and have an exit plan. Nurses, please do not fall for the ego boosting antics utilized by some hospitals to keep you in place while subjecting you to harsh conditions. You are not a superhero unless you are one to yourself and your loved ones. Your psychological and physical health is worth more than gold. Take a listen, share with friends and colleagues, and follow me on Twitter. My handle is @nursegideon. Finally, feel free to share your thoughts with me about this and other topics impacting the nursing profession. In this episode, the host discusses if there is a correlation between the cost of nursing and impact as a nurse. The National Center for Education Statistics reported that the average tuition in the 2020/21 calendar year was $9,400 for a public institution; $37,600 for a private nonprofit institution; and $18,200 for a private for-profit. This, of course, is before the additional costs (stethoscope, drug guidebook, scrubs, etc.) associated with attending a nursing program. How do one decide on a nursing program with so many nursing programs out there. And in deciding, is there a correlation between the cost of the nursing program and your impact as a nurse? I would love to know what you think. I became a nurse in 2007 and have had stints in the emergency department, medical intensive care unit, neuro intensive care unit, coronary care unit, post anesthesia care unit, electrophysiology lab, flight nursing in the U.S. Air Force, and clinical nursing instructorship. This is the third and final part of the Racism in Nursing series. In this episode, the host discusses ways to address racism in the profession by using the nursing process as a blueprint. The American Nurses Association views the Nursing Process as the "common thread uniting different types of nurses who work in varied areas…the essential core of practice for the registered nurse to deliver holistic, patient-focused care.” Since racism divides us, why not use one of the most fundamental aspects of our profession as a model to work towards uniting us? Listen and share this episode. I became a nurse in 2007 and have had stints in the emergency department, medical intensive care unit, neuro intensive care unit, coronary care unit, post anesthesia care unit, electrophysiology lab, flight nursing in the U.S. Air Force, and clinical nursing instructorship. This episode is part 2 of the three-part series on racism in nursing. This episode focuses on the nurse-to-nurse form of racism by first offering the National Commission to Address Racism in Nursing definition of racism as “Assaults on the human spirit in the form of actions, biases, prejudices, and an ideology of superiority based on race that persistently cause moral suffering and physical harm of individuals and perpetuate systemic injustices and inequities.” The host also discusses the complexity and the intertwining of culture and racism. Part 3 will offer tangible ways to address racism. I became a nurse in 2007 and have had stints in the emergency department, medical intensive care unit, neuro intensive care unit, coronary care unit, post anesthesia care unit, electrophysiology lab, flight nursing in the U.S. Air Force, and clinical nursing instructorship. I served as an FDA drug investigator for four years. I am U.S. Air Force combat veteran and am currently on active duty as a Lieutenant Commander in the U.S. Public Health Service. This episode will focus on the issue of racism in nursing. Yes, there is racism in nursing, unfortunately. The host shares excerpt from a 2022 article by the American Nurses Association, titled, Racism within the Nursing Profession is a Substantial Program: "...nearly half [of respondents] reported that there is widespread racism in nursing, demonstrating a substantial problem within the profession...” Nursing remains one of the most rewarding professions in the history of mankind. Given the complexity of racism, this episode is only Part 1 of a three-part series. This episode introduces the listener to a form of racism, client-to-nurse. Part 2 and 3 will discuss nurse-to-nurse and institution-to-nurse, forms of racism in nursing. I became a nurse in 2007 and have had stints in the emergency department, medical intensive care unit, neuro intensive care unit, coronary care unit, post anesthesia care unit, electrophysiology lab, flight nursing in the U.S. Air Force, and clinical nursing instructorship. In the episode, host addresses the problem of burnout in nursing by offering interrelated factors associated with burnout. They are Affinity, Connection, and Time. A ffinity refers to passion for a discipline, process flow, or patient population; connection relates to attraction to a unit, hospital, or community; and finally, time , which refers to the length of time in a particular role or position. Host also interviews guest LT Tessa Flecther of the U.S. Public Health Service, a Family Nurse Practitioner as well as Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner, about her experience with burnout. Lt Fletcher offers valuable tips on ways to deal with burnout. Have a listen! In this episode, the host discusses the stimulating or impairing nature of anxiety in nursing, for the novice nurse and the more experienced nurse. The host shares his experience with anxiety while navigating different nursing specialties and career experiences. The uncomfortable feeling of apprehension, uneasiness, uncertainty, or dreadful experience associated with nursing maybe used to fuel peak performance. One does not have to adopt a maladaptive approach to dealing with anxiety. I became a nurse in 2007 and have had stints in the emergency department, medical intensive care unit, neuro intensive care unit, coronary care unit, post anesthesia care unit, electrophysiology lab, flight nursing in the U.S. Air Force, and clinical nursing instructorship. In this episode, the host offers solutions from a leadership perspective. The triple R approach Review , Reprimand/Remove , and Restore - aims to restore a culture of civility, confidence, and safety for nurses and patients. Please offer your thoughts by emailing me.
