On December 24, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo announced that the United States will open a consulate in Western Sahara. This further solidifies the United States’ recognition of Moroccos’ claim over the disputed territory. I will briefly go over later what the dispute over the territory was before this recognition. Nevertheless, the State Department released a press statement last Thursday. What is the importance of this recognition? What is the Western Sahara dispute about?
