Bite size. Full length version available.
Bottom trawling is a destructive fishing method that indiscriminately catches everything in its path, causing damage to the seabed and releasing carbon. Over the past 150 years, bottom trawling has depleted fish populations and harmed marine biodiversity. Efforts have been made to mitigate the impact of bottom trawling through the establishment of marine protected areas and the development of more selective fishing gear. However, the recovery of fish populations and the restoration of the seabed will take time. It is important for consumers to be informed about the fishing methods used and to support environmentally friendly fishing practices.
In this podcast I talk to Dr Jean-Luc Solandt, Principal Specialist in Marine Protected Areas at the Marine Conservation Society.
