Top five types of motion:

5: Perpetual. Great concept, but loses points for not being possible. Various hucksters claimed to have invented perpetual motion machines over the years, to the point that I’ve heard it referred to as “the snake oil of physics.”

4: Contrary. A beautiful musical trick. Unfortunately not found in this week’s song, but still worthy of the number four spot.

3: Brownian. Fascinating and mesmerizing, and helped prove the existence of atoms. Plus it’s one of the few terms I remember from High School science.

2: Slow. Everything looks better in slow-motion.

1: “Motion” by Peter Sandberg.

What makes this a beautiful song:

1. The piano is so soft it feels like it’s wearing slippers.

2. Because it’s so soft, the mic is placed close enough to hear the damper pedal coming on and off; this sound acts like unintentional percussion.

3. The consistent tone in the background provides the illusion of perpetual motion.

Recommended listening activity:

Getting motional.
