After the childlike simplicity and wonder of Songs of Innocence, published at the beginning of the French Revolution in 1789, Blake followed with Songs of Experience, a much darker vision of the world. Including such famous poems as 'The Tyger', 'London' and 'The Sick Rose', these two collections are intended, as Blake wrote, to show the contrary states of the human soul.
