Kia ora, Talofa, Ma’lelei, Bula, Aloha and Welcome to Season 10 Episode 62 of Breakfast Bites, by TEIVOVOdigital.com – a wrap of Pasifika people’s sports news, on Monday morning 02 September 2024.
Coming to you with tons of hanisi from the 180th meridian, in the middle of the Blue continent, where it is partly cloudy and 20 degrees Celsius again at 5am this morning!
In Rugby Union: The Wallabies cracked their duck in La Plata yesterday, beating Los Pumas 19-20 thanks to a late penalty for a ruck infringement, to claim their first win of the Rugby Championship 2024 in abysmal weather.
Replacement flyhalf, Ben Donaldson who had only been on the field for a minute, slotted the final kick of the game to secure Australia's first win in the competition since August 2022.
"I'm really proud. We have a lot of work to do, but we're pleased to get the four points and we're in the contest," Australia’s Kiwi Coach Joe Schmidt said after the game.
In Rugby League: The Pacific Championships will be played in four countries in October and November 2024 with the winner of the Men’s and Women’s Pacific Bowls to play off against the third-placed Pacific Cup nations, for a place in their respective 2025 Pacific Cup pools.
Fiji will host Pacific Championship matches for the first time, along with Port Moresby, Brisbane, Christchurch, Auckland and Sydney.
Australia, New Zealand and Tonga will contest the Cup while Fiji, Papua New Guinea and Cook Islands will face-off for the Bowl in the Men’s comp.
The Women’s Cup includes Australia, New Zealand and PNG, with Fiji, Tonga, Cook Islands and Samoa contesting the Bowl.
The Women’s Bowl winners will gain direct entry to RLWC2026, while the runner-up will progress to the 2025 World Series.
In UFC: UFC CEO Dana White has spent a lot of money and made big promises regarding the upcoming UFC306 pay-per-view event at the Sphere in Las Vegas.
Despite White’s claim that fans “will never see anything like this in your life,” many tickets remain unsold for the 14 September spectacle.
One reason ticket sales may be lagging for the Mexican Independence Day event, is that it is going head-to-head against the Canelo Alvarez vs. Edgar Berlanga boxing card at the MGM Grand on the same night.
Another reason the UFC could be struggling to sell tickets, is that the cost of tickets is higher than usual for a UFC pay-per-view.
In the NFL SportsBiz: America’s Team – the Dallas Cowboys is the first professional sports franchise to breach a US$10Billion valuation, according to Forbes.
Their latest US$10.1B valuation is double its valuation in 2019 - and is US$2.5B more than the second-place Rams.
Dallas put some of that money to good use this week, signing wide receiver CeeDee Lamb to a four-year, US$136Million deal, ending a contract holdout that spilled out onto social media from the Receiver.
And at the US Tennis Open: Tennis superstar Serena Williams was special guest for the match between Andrey Rublev and Grigor Dimitrov at Arthur Ashe Stadium yesterday.
The 23-time Grand Slam champion was on her second day visiting Flushing Meadows, and closely watched her friend Dimitrov's win to reach the US Open quarterfinals.
The legendary American tennis player sat next to singer Alicia Keys in the box, when Dimitrov secured a tight five-set win against the world No. 6 Rublev.
After the match, Dimitrov said of the six-time US Open champion Serena Williams, “She gave me a good pep talk yesterday.”
Mmmm . . great to see such warm Russia-US relations
And that’s a wrap peeps!
