Kia ora, Talofa, Ma’lelei, Bula, Aloha and Welcome to Season 10 Episode 64 of Breakfast Bites, by TEIVOVOdigital.com – a wrap of Pasifika people’s sports news, on Wednesday morning 04 September 2024.
Happy birthday Ruby Evans-Costello!
Coming to you with tons of hanisi from the 180th meridian, in the middle of the Blue continent, where it is partly cloudy and a cool 19 degrees Celsius at 5am this morning!
In Boxing: Japan’s undisputed and unbeaten World Super-Bantamweight Champion Naoya ‘Monster’ Inoue defended his belts after an unfortunate early ending to his fight against Ireland’s TJ Doheny at Tokyo yesterday.
Inoue now has a 28-0 record with 25 wins x KO, thanks TO Doheny pulling up injured in the seventh round, pointing at his back, before the fight was called off.
In Rugby League: The Pacific Bowl Men’s rugby league tournament Draw: Sat 19 Oct Fiji vs PNG in Fiji, Sat 26 Oct Fiji vs Cook Islands in Fiji, Sun 3 Nov PNG v Cook Islands in Santos Stadium, Port Moresby and on Sun 10 Nov Promotion/Relegation Playoff at CommBank Stadium, Sydney.
The Pacific Bowl Women’s rugby league tournament Draw: Sat 19 Oct Tonga v Samoa in Fiji, Sat 26 Oct Fiji v Cook Islands in Fiji, Sat 2 Nov Final Go Media Stadium in Auckland and on Sun 10 Nov Promotion/Relegation Playoff at CommBank Stadium in Sydney.
In SportsBiz: Despite his three Super Bowl rings and 10-year US$450million deal, which made him the highest paid player in the NFL when he signed the contract four years ago, Kansas City Chiefs Quarterback Patrick Mahomes is being left behind by his younger rivals.
The market has changed so much in such a short span, there are now 12 quarterbacks who earn more per year than Mahomes.
And there is growing talk that the Dallas Cowboys’ Dak Prescott will become the NFL’s first US$60M a year player in his next deal.
So, how can it be that players with inferior resumes to Mahomes are being paid more per year?
“It’s about timing and leverage. Those two factors are driving the most inflationary quarterback market in recent history,” according to The Wall Street Journal.
“Teams are spending more because they simply have more to offer - this year NFL teams have US$255Million to spend on player salaries.
“Not only are star quarterbacks being paid more, they are also receiving a bigger slice of the cap,” according to The Athletic.
“Today, a top passer takes nearly a quarter of his team’s salary.
“And from 2018 to 2023, the NFL’s highest-paid quarterbacks saw their average salary increase 64 percent, while the NFL’s salary cap increased only 27 percent.”
That’s why that 16-year-old rugby union player from Queen Victoria School in Fiji, who kicked a 57M penalty a couple of weeks ago, should consider trying out as a kicker in the NFL!
And finally only in the USA: Tennis queen Serena Williams attended Day 7 of the US Open Tennis Championships at Arthur Ashe Stadium in head-to-toe Gucci.
Known for her fashion style both on and off the court, Serena’s Gucci gear featured a fitted white miniskirt, highlighted with black and yellow trim.
The polo crop top, meanwhile, showcased Gucci’s GG Supreme monogram pattern in a vibrant yellow tennis ball twist.
To complement her outfit, Williams clutched Gucci’s Ophidia GG Pouch, showcasing their signature beige “GG” pattern and central green and red heritage stripes.
Serena Williams’ companion at the tennis, was singer Alicia Keys wearing a pule tasi!
And that’s a wrap peeps!
