Kia ora, Talofa, Ma’lelei, Bula, Aloha and Welcome to Season 10 Episode 49 of Breakfast Bites, by TEIVOVOdigital.com – a wrap of Pasifika people’s sports news, on Tuesday morning 20 August 2024.
Coming to you with tons of hanisi from the 180th meridian, in the middle of the blue continent, where it is partly cloudy and 20 degrees Celsius at 5am this morning.
In Rugby Union: Former Wallabies star Mark Nawaqanitawase has hit the ground running in rugby league, scoring a sensational try on his debut in the 13-man code.
Nawaqanitawase joined the Sydney Roosters following the conclusion of the Paris Olympic Games Rugby 7s, making his debut in the Roosters reserve grade, beating four defenders to run in a try from 20M out in their 23-22 win over Canterbury Bulldogs on Sunday.
And in Rugby League: Losses in eight of their last nine games have left the Eels in a dogfight to avoid their first wooden spoon since 2018, while last year's grand finalists, the Broncos lost to the Roosters, Panthers and Storm inside the first five rounds and have struggled for consistency all season.
So, they both have nothing to play for on Friday night at Suncorp except PRIDE!
In Sportsbiz: NBCUniversal had a blowout Paris Olympic Games, averaging 30.6 million viewers across all platforms, an eye-popping 82% spike compared to the 2021 Tokyo Games.
NBCUniversal says 4.1 million viewers per day streamed the action on NBCU’s Apps with the lion’s share on Peacock for a total of 23.5 billion minutes streamed, up 40% from all prior Summer and Winter Olympics combined.
The 4.1 million viewers in a day would be a Peacock record if not for the NFL game that Peacock aired between the Chief-Dolphins in January, which brought in 23 million viewers on Peacock.
Peacock again has one exclusive NFL game; a Week 1 matchup in São Paulo, Brazil, between the Packers and Eagles.
And then starting in 2025, Peacock will get 50 regular-season NBA games, which should be another big driver of subs.
In Football: Pep G praised Man City’s attitude to defy a disrupted pre-season and get their Premier League title defence off to a winning start, beating Chelsea 2-0 with goals from Erling Haaland and Mateo Kovacic.
In basketball: American Basketball superstar Carmelo Anthony is set to take Australia by storm.
The 10-time NBA All Star is heading Down Under in September to host elite basketball camps and exclusive evening experiences in Melbourne and Perth.
Anthony, 40, is one of the most iconic players to ever play in the NBA, finishing his NBA career after 19 seasons which also saw him earn three Olympic gold medals.
Anthony retired in 2023 as the then ninth highest point scorer in NBA history, ending his career with 28,289 points.
In UFC: “It’s because I’m Maori bro,” Kai Kara-France said after delivering the dynamo Kiwi flyweight’s 13th first round knockout, beating Australian Steve Erceg with a brutal right hand that forced the Referee to step in and stop the fight in UFC305 in Perth, Australia on Sunday.
Kiora mate!
And that’s a wrap!
