Kia ora, Talofa, Ma’lelei, Bula, Aloha and Welcome to Season 10 Episode 53 of Breakfast Bites, by TEIVOVOdigital.com – a wrap of Pasifika people’s sports news, on Saturday morning 24 August 2024.
Coming to you with tons of hanisi from the 180th meridian, in the middle of the blue continent, where it is a sweltering 23 degrees Celsius at 5am this morning – crazy!
In Rugby Union: The Fiji Water Flying Fijians scored 27 unanswered points in the second half at HFC Stadium in Suva yesterday afternoon, after turning around with a slender 16-15 lead over Manu Samoa.
The Manu didn’t look like scoring in the last half, as the defending champions Fiji opened the Asahi Super Dry Pacific Nations Cup with a resounding 42-16 win.
Canada play Japan in Vancouver tomorrow.
And in Rugby League: Kevin Walters has declared there will be “no ifs or buts” - his side will play NRL finals this season.
This after the Broncos kept their season alive, overcoming a horror start to score five unanswered tries to beat the Eels 24-30 last night.
But to play finals footy, Walters will need his men to win against the Dolphins and Storm, plus the Saint George Dragons to lose two of their final games - against the Sharks, Eels and the Raiders.
Big call Kevy!
In Football: England international and Real Madrid star, Jude Bellingham will miss this weekend’s La Liga clash against Real Valladolid due to a foot injury.
He is expected to be sidelined for a month of action and will miss England’s two UEFA Nations League games in September.
Bellingham will also miss at least three Club games, either side of September’s international break, in a frustrating start to the new season.
In Boxing: Tonight Floyd “Money” Mayweather and John Gotti II clash in an exhibition boxing match in Mexico City; and while Mayweather may have the edge in experience and skill, he is giving up a lot of size.
In their first matchup in June 2023, Gotti tipped the scales at 82.1Kg, while Mayweather refused to weigh in.
This time around, a fully clothed Mayweather tipped the scales at 72.8Kg, and with Gotti again coming in at 82.1Kg, the 47-year-old boxing legend is giving up a lot of weight for the fight.
And in Sportsbiz: The final women’s golf major championship of the year teed off today, at one of the world’s most famous courses.
For just the third time in the 48-year history of the Women’s British Open, the tournament will be played at the Old Course in St Andrews, commonly known as the home of golf.
There is a record purse of US$9.5Million up for grabs, with the winner taking home US$1.4M.
Beats baking scones to sell I guess!
And that’s a wrap peeps!
