Today I am talking with T.J. Ferrante. T.J. is senior counsel and a board certified health care lawyer with Foley and Lardner. I asked T.J. to come on the show because he is an expert in the legal and compliance issues associated with telemedicine. The use of telemedicine has exploded over the last few years and I think these issues will be relevant to so many of us in compliance. Today I am talking with Jay Anstine of Bluebird Healthlaw Partners. Jay is a lawyer and compliance officer and we are going to discuss strategies you can use to engage with leadership and be seen as a partner as opposed to an obstacle (or as my colleague described it a few years ago, a myopic obstructionist). Jay has some very practical suggestions for building rapport and building relationships to help remove some of the perception that compliance is a barrier to operations. I will include all of Jay’s contact information in the show notes which you can access through your podcast app or by going to the podcast website, compliancemastermind.com. Jay has a great weekly newsletter that you can sign up for on his website so definitely check that out. Today on the show I am talking with Sharon Peters. Sharon is a partner in the Portland office of Lewis Brisbois and is a member of the firm’s Healthcare and Labor and Employment practices. Sharon and I are talking about the National Practitioner Data Bank (NPDB). The NPDB is a web-based repository of reports containing information on medical malpractice payments and certain adverse actions related to health care practitioners, providers, and suppliers. Established by Congress in 1986, it is a workforce tool that prevents practitioners from moving state to state without disclosure or discovery of potentially damaging performance issues. With the increasing focus on quality care and patient safety I think this is a very timely topic and Sharon provides some great insights. Today we are talking all about value based care and alternative payment models. The transition from payment for the volume of care provided to payment for the value that care brings, is here to stay and as compliance officers we need to get our arms around these new payment models in order to determine how they impact our organizations and our compliance programs. So today I’m going to talk about where to begin. First we'll discuss how to evaluate the compliance program requirements associated with value based care and alternative payment models, and what steps you need to take to ensure your program addresses the risks and program requirements associated with the programs. And second, I am going to identify ways to help take your compliance program beyond the core components and identify strategies and opportunities for operational integration. Today I am talking with Chris Haney about Big Data and data analysis. This is another topic on my 2018 bucket list of areas that have intimidated me in the past. The good news is that Chris is an expert and explains these concepts in a way that non-statisticians can understand. This episode provides a great overview of data in healthcare and how we can utilize data analysis in our compliance programs. Chris talks about prioritizing our data analysis, proactive versus reactive approaches, and the role of statistical sampling. Chris Haney is the Managing Director of the Forensus Group specializing in financial investigations, forensic accounting and statistical sampling analysis. Previously, Chris led investigations at a global consulting firm, and was a Forensic Accountant at the Federal Bureau of Investigation specializing in complex white collar and healthcare violations. Happy New Year everyone and thanks for joining me for the first episode in 2018. One of my goals for 2018 is to tackle subjects that have intimidated me in the past, see if I can get some clarity, and begin to feel more confident about my knowledge of those topics. Today is one of those episodes, so if you’ve ever been somewhat intimidated by cybersecurity, I think you are really going to enjoy my conversation with Donna Grindle. Donna is the founder of Kardon Compliance and also the co-host on the Help Me With HIPAA Podcast. If you haven’t personally been impacted by a cybersecurity breach, I am sure that you know people who have. It seems like every week we hear about another data breach and it’s not just big health systems, physician practices, imaging centers, health insurance companies, and even Medicaid programs. No organization is immune. Cybersecurity is a huge risk for organizations and it makes sense to not only tackle the issue from a technology perspective, but also on a personal level because it only takes one employee to respond to a phishing email to expose an entire organization. Donna knows her stuff and shares some great information and strategies for compliance officers. Donna can be reached at: https://kardonhq.com Help Me With HIPAA Podcast: https://helpmewithhipaa.com Below are two great episodes on the Help Me With HIPAA Podcast that address cybersecurity issues: https://helpmewithhipaa.com/cybersecurity-naughty-list-2017-ep-133/ https://helpmewithhipaa.com/is-there-a-cyber-storm-brewing-on-the-horizon-ep-128/ I can be reached at: compliancemastermind@gmail.com Podcast website: www.compliancemastermind.com Remember to subscribe to the show! I am really excited about today’s show. One of the reasons I started this podcast is because I think compliance officers learn so much from listening to other compliance officers share their experiences. Today we are going inside the structure of the ACO compliance programs for two large health systems. We will talk with their compliance officers and each of will respond to the same questions so you’ll get a really good understanding of their organizations, how they have set up their compliance programs and how they interact with governance and operational leadership. We’ll also talk about challenges they’ve encountered, one area of compliance that they are focusing on in 2017, and then their recommendations for anyone either starting or managing an ACO compliance program. First we’ll hear from Becky Lovelace, she is the Compliance Director for Ascension Care Management Health Partners. Then we will hear from Robert Jagielski, the Compliance Director of Clinical Integration for MedProVideX, a subsidiary of Dignity Health. This show will be perfect for you if you are just getting involved in ACO compliance and are building a program or you are currently managing an ACO compliance program and are looking for confirmation or new ideas for your program. Today I thought it would be fun to take a break from talking about legal and regulatory obligations and talk about how we can make compliance engaging and maybe even a little fun. Corporate Compliance and Ethics Week is coming up the week of November 5th – 11th. I know a lot of organizations use this week to highlight their compliance program. I also know a lot of other organizations maybe don’t celebrate any particular week, but may do something outside of the box every once in a while to help raise the profile of the compliance function. Every organization is different and has its own tolerance for fun and innovation, and the activities I talk about today can all be modified to fit the culture of your company.
