IN THE EPISODE

Symbolic vs. Realistic drawing
Children have 2 types of drawing and BOTH should be celebrated and encouraged

Symbolic drawing
Children draw with a story. They are learning language, story telling and relationships. They are unconcerned with the marks they make on the paper so you should as well.

Example of symbolic drawing
The child shows you a drawing that may not be legible or is just basic shapes or scribbles. A child tells you "this is the wind blowing my hat off at the beach and daddy caught it in the water"

Realistic drawing
Art that anyone can learn. This is you seeing the world in various shapes and symbols you are able to relay onto paper.

Example of realistic drawing
A child draws a flower and you see the shapes of a flower. You recognize this as a flower.

Bringing this mindset into the classroom is extremely important because it's out job to encourage this mindset and understanding the difference will help both functions flourish. It's also great to use as an art project too!
