While the shortlists receive a good amount of coverage after their announcement, there are three categories that don’t get as much coverage. The short film categories (Animated, Documentary, and Live Action, respectively) are some of the biggest prognosticator blind spots since these films don’t get talked about as much year-round, but you can find articles and pieces about them if you do a little digging. One of the most knowledgable people in the game is Brandon MacMurray, founder and editor of ShortStick Films, and he joins me for a special shorts reaction edition of the Water Cooler Podcast.

Brandon and I talk about what films we feel should’ve made the cut, what sure-things we are shocked missed out, and, at the end of the pod, we discuss some potential early winners. Now that the shortlists are out, these films are now going to be thrust into the spotlight. I have listed the finalists below–do any seem like they are going to make the final five?
