"The Call to Change" (Luke 3:1-21) June 30, 2024
Manage episode 428328567 series 3497757
As we continue in our series on Luke, P. Dan Forest helps us look at Luke 3:1-21, which describes the ministry of John the Baptist and the baptism of Jesus. This passage begins with a historical context, naming key political and religious leaders of the time.
John the Baptist, fulfilling Isaiah's prophecy, calls people to repentance and baptizes them in the Jordan River. He preaches about the coming Messiah and the importance of bearing good fruit as evidence of genuine repentance.
John addresses various groups, including tax collectors and soldiers, offering practical advice on living righteously. He emphasizes that he baptizes with water, but the one coming after him, Jesus, will baptize with the Holy Spirit and fire. The passage concludes with Jesus being baptized by John, during which the heavens open, the Holy Spirit descends on Jesus like a dove, and God's voice proclaims Him as His beloved Son.
As John the Baptist was preparing God's people for change, we must look at our own lives and ask how the arrival of Jesus has changed them.
We meet weekly at the City Centre Community Centre in Richmond, British Columbia. We gather for worship on the 3F! Everyone is welcome to come!
