Dr Anne Carruthers is an Associate Lecturer in the School of Modern Languages at Newcastle University where she teaches film studies. Her research interests lie in phenomenologies, narrative, and close textual analysis, and she has published on how pregnancy, the pregnant body, and the physical are explored in film. In this conversation, we talk about her new book titled Fertile Visions: The Uterus as a Narrative Space in Cinema from the Americas, published by Bloomsbury. We discuss the uterus as a narrative space, the concept of pregnant embodiment, and the impact reproductive technologies such as ultrasound, which allow us to visualize the unborn, have on our understanding of pregnancy and reproduction, and the legal moral implications that follow in variously framing the unborn as subject and object.
