Encore Presentation of an important issue facing so many people in today's world.

Shannon Fisher welcomes Harvard Medical School Instructor Dr. Jim Hopper on the 50th episode of The Authentic Woman. The two discuss the neurobiology of trauma - the manner in which the brain responds to physical or psychological trauma.

This show examines the scientific reasons those who have experienced or are experiencing trauma can exhibit uncharacteristic behavior. Hopper explores the science behind response to trauma, including the different ways men, women, and children react to these experiences. He offers suggestions for overcoming these psychological (and physical) effects and how loved ones of those who are in need of healing can be supportive.

Traumatic experiences include military combat, childhood sexual and/or physical abuse, experiencing sexual assault as an adult, physical assault or robbery, kidnapping or imprisonment, being in an accident, witnessing an accident, among others. Link to Washington Post article mentioned in the show.

Our Lives with Shannon Fisher explores personal, political, and societal perspectives of the American experience. The show delves deeply into the worlds of writers, artists, celebrities, and community leaders and offers listeners food for thought on ways to better themselves and the world around them.
