Welcome to Wednesday Evening prayer from the Anglican ‘A prayer book for Australia’.

We proclaim the Good News of our Lord Jesus Christ:

GOD in his infinite mercy, forgives all sins, and through our baptism in the name of our Saviour, Jesus Christ, we are given a rebirth into new life, free from the burden of all sin. ALLELUIA

With faithfulness we respond to the good news:

We acknowledge Christ as our saviour and accept with gratitude, that we are forgiven for all wrong doings, past and present. To honour the gift of forgiveness, we release our burden of guilt and rise up to live in the glory of God forever more.

Blessed be God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit, Blessed be God forever.

Let us Pray.

The glory of the Lord shall be revealed.

and all people shall see it together.

Glory to God; Father, Son and Holy Spirit:

2 The Opening Canticle, A Song of Praise

God be gracious to us and bless us:
and make your face to shine upon us,
That your way may be known upon earth:

The day is now past, and the night is at hand.

Let us pray with one heart and mind.

Silence may be kept.

Father of lights, receive the prayer and praise we offer you as our evening sacrifice; make us a light for all the world,
delivered by your goodness from all the works of darkness; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord.

Amen.

God of all power and might, the author and giver of all good things: graft in our hearts the love of your name, increase in us true religion, nourish us with all goodness, and of your great mercy keep us in the same; through Jesus Christ our Lord.

1st Reading

Daniel 4; 28-37

28All this came upon King Nebuchadnezzar. 29At the end of twelve months he was walking on the roof of the royal palace of Babylon, 30and the king said, “Is this not magnificent Babylon, which I have built as a royal capital by my mighty power and for my glorious majesty?” 31While the words were still in the king's mouth, a voice came from heaven: “O King Nebuchadnezzar, to you it is declared: The kingdom has departed from you! 32You shall be driven away from human society, and your dwelling shall be with the animals of the field. You shall be made to eat grass like oxen, and seven times shall pass over you, until you have learned that the Most High has sovereignty over the kingdom of mortals and gives it to whom he will.” 33Immediately the sentence was fulfilled against Nebuchadnezzar. He was driven away from human society, ate grass like oxen, and his body was bathed with the dew of heaven, until his hair grew as long as eagles' feathers and his nails became like birds' claws.

Nebuchadnezzar Praises God

34When that period was over, I, Nebuchadnezzar, lifted my eyes to heaven, and my reason returned to me.

I blessed the Most High,

and praised and honored the one who lives forever.

For his sovereignty is an everlasting sovereignty,

and his kingdom endures from generation to generation.

35All the inhabitants of the earth are accounted as nothing,

and he does what he wills with the host of heaven

and the inhabitants of the earth.

There is no one who can stay his hand

or say to him, “What are you doing?”

36At that time my reason returned to me; and my majesty and splendor were restored to me for the glory of my kingdom. My counselors and my lords sought me out, I was re-established over my kingdom, and still more greatness was added to me. 37Now I, Nebuchadnezzar, praise and extol and honor the King of heaven,

for all his works are truth, and his ways are justice; and he is able to bring low

those who walk in pride.

2nd Reading

Matthew 16. 1-12

1The Pharisees and Sadducees came, and to test Jesus they asked him to show them a sign from heaven. 2He answered them, “When it is evening, you say, ‘It will be fair weather, for the sky is red.’ 3And in the morning, ‘It will be stormy today, for the sky is red and threatening.’ You know how to interpret the appearance of the sky, but you cannot interpret the signs of the times. 4An evil and adulterous generation asks for a sign, but no sign will be given to it except the sign of Jonah.” Then he left them and went away.

The Yeast of the Pharisees and Sadducees

5When the disciples reached the other side, they had forgotten to bring any bread. 6Jesus said to them, “Watch out, and beware of the yeast of the Pharisees and Sadducees.” 7They said to one another, “It is because we have brought no bread.” 8And becoming aware of it, Jesus said, “You of little faith, why are you talking about having no bread? 9Do you still not perceive? Do you not remember the five loaves for the five thousand, and how many baskets you gathered? 10Or the seven loaves for the four thousand, and how many baskets you gathered? 11How could you fail to perceive that I was not speaking about bread? Beware of the yeast of the Pharisees and Sadducees!” 12Then they understood that he had not told them to beware of the yeast of bread, but of the teaching of the Pharisees and Sadducees.

7 The Canticle, The Song of Mary (Magnificat)

My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord:
my spirit rejoices in God my Saviour,
Who has looked with favour on his lowly servant:
from this day all generations will call me blessed;
The Almighty has done great things for me:
and holy is his name.
God has mercy on those who fear him:
from generation to generation.
The Lord has shown strength with his arm:
and scattered the proud in their conceit,
Casting down the mighty from their thrones:
and lifting up the lowly.
God has filled the hungry with good things:
and sent the rich away empty.
He has come to the aid of his servant Israel:
to remember the promise of mercy,
The promise made to our forebears:
to Abraham and his children for ever.

Luke 1.47–55

8 The belief and principle is said

I believe in God,
creator of heaven and earth,

whose love and merciful forgiveness

endures everlasting.

I believe in Christ the saviour,

whose example of love and compassion,

taught us a restored way to live, in collaborative unity with all people.

I believe in the Holy Spirit,

whose divine guidance brings

us together to be one with the Holy Trinity.

9 The Lord’s Prayer and the Collect of the Day

Our Father in heaven,
hallowed be your name,
your kingdom come,
your will be done,
on earth as in heaven.
Give us today our daily bread.
Forgive us our sins
as we forgive those who sin against us.
Save us from the time of trial
and deliver us from evil.
For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours

now and for ever. Amen.

Prayer of the Week

Twenty-Second Sunday after Pentecost

Generous God,

Your Son has opened for us a new and living way into your presence

Give us pure hearts and steadfast wills

To worship you in spirit and in truth.

Through the same Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen

Almighty God, we thank you for your church and its place in our world and we ask that you bless the whole church. Bless all clergy, and volunteers, with modern thinking and progressive plans to bring a safe and inclusive church into being throughout our country.

Merciful God Hear our Prayer

Generous God, we ask that you show generosity by remembering the homeless, the destitute, the sick, the aged, and all who have none to care for them. Heal those who are broken in body or spirit and turn their sorrow into joy. Send people to minister to their needs in generous ways.

Merciful God Hear our prayer

Loving God, how great a companion you are to everyone of us, we pray that you give relief to the lonely, guide them in their friendships to be companions of others in need.

Merciful God; Hear our prayer.

Lighten our darkness, Lord, we pray:

and in your great mercy defend us

May our Lord Jesus Christ, and God our Father, comfort our hearts and establish them in every good work and word.
