========================================= Traditionally, the ‘sudden awakening’ of Master Eno (6th Chinese patriarch, Dajian Huineng) has been contrasted with the ‘gradual awakening’ of his compatriot, the monk Jinshu (Shenxiu), to the point of making Master Eno the super champion of understanding awakening and the monk Jinshu the one who ‘understood nothing’. The origin of this opposition lies in the two poems they both wrote at the request of the 5th Patriarch Konin (Hongren). If we reread the ‘Platform Sutra’ carefully, in which Master Eno himself recounts this episode, we first notice that there are not two, but three poems, and that Master Eno's two poems are basically a commentary on and homage to Jinshu's poem. Master Eno is doing nothing more than taking Jinshu to the higher stage of the expression of awakening through the understanding of emptiness. In other words, the two practices co-exist. There is no difference in nature, only a difference in degree. The two characters come together in the awakening of the Buddha. Oral teaching given at the Gendronnière Zen Temple on 1 August 2024. Simultaneous translation into English by the nun Catherine Delhomme.
