In this episode, my guest is Michelle Hurn, a registered and licensed dietitian, and animal protein advocate. Michelle shares her health journey, from being diagnosed with anorexia at ate 12 to finding healing through nutrition. She discusses her experience with the standard American diet, as well as her struggles with anxiety and depression.
Michelle explains how her own health issues led her to question the conventional nutrition guidelines and explore the benefits of a low-carb, high-fat, animal protein-based diet. She also discusses the importance of bioavailability and the role of saturated fat in our diets. We discuss the role of inflammation, oxidation, and hyperglycemia in causing health issues, particularly in relation to mental health disorders and metabolic diseases. The importance of a low-carbohydrate, animal-based diet in promoting metabolic health and improving mental health is emphasized. As a dietitian, Michelle questioned the conventional nutrition guidelines and the use of high-carbohydrate, low-fat diets for various health conditions. She observed the cycle of sickness in acute care settings and felt frustrated by the lack of improvement in patients' health.
After experiencing her own health issues, Michelle adopted a low-carb, high-fat, animal protein-based diet and found significant improvements in her physical and mental well-being. She discovered the importance of bioavailability and the benefits of saturated fat.
The addictive nature of sugar and the need to set a culture of healthy eating for children are discussed. The conversation also highlights the potential of ketogenic diets in treating anorexia and bipolar disorder. The importance of structuring nutritional plans and the long-term consequences of poor dietary choices are addressed. The conversation concludes with a message of hope and the belief that the body and brain have the capacity to heal when provided with the right nutrition.
Michelle wrote the books 'The Dietitian's Dilemma' and 'The Fox Family Food Fight' to share her story and the evidence supporting a low-carb, high-fat, animal protein-based diet for various health conditions.
