I anledning af at Frankenstein nu bliver genudgivet, kigger vi den gamle gyser efter i sømmene. Den skriver sig ind i den gotiske uhygges litteraturhistorie, men hvordan udviklede den sig fra oplysningstiden til i dag? Hvorfor var det primært kvinder der skrev gysere i 1800-tallet? Og hvordan har gotikken præget den britiske nationalforståelse?
