Living a good life inevitably involves some tough choices. Healthy eating, enough exercise, sufficient sleep and … let’s get serious here … dealing with the bad behaviour that robs us of the good results we’re looking for.
So here we are on the fifth day of this new year and already many a new year’s resolution has been broken, am I right? Which merely pays testimony to the reality that positive change is hard work. Not negative change though – behaving badly just seems to come naturally.
Have you ever had to work hard at being selfish? At not sharing? At hording your money? Never! But selflessness, generosity, kindness … they’re far harder to achieve on a consistent basis.
That’s why this wakeup call is such an important one for us at this time of year.
Ezekiel 18:31-32 Cast away from you all the transgressions that you have committed against me, and get yourselves a new heart and a new spirit! Why will you die, O house of Israel? For I have no pleasure in the death of anyone, says the Lord GOD. Turn, then, and live. (NRSV)
Yesterday we saw that God promises to give us a new heart and a new spirit, the Holy Spirit, to empower us to be all that He made us to be. We’re not alone in this.
But there’s one thing that He cannot and will not do for us. Only we can decide to turn away from the things we know are wrong. So please, heed the warning. Cast away from you all the transgressions that you have committed against God. Your life depends on it!
