Text: Proverbs 6:12-15 (ESV)

12 A worthless person, a wicked man,

goes about with crooked speech,

13 winks with his eyes, signals with his feet,

points with his finger,

14 with perverted heart devises evil,

continually sowing discord;

15 therefore calamity will come upon him suddenly;

in a moment he will be broken beyond healing.

BEWARE OF SCAMMERS

Solomon describes a "wicked" and "worthless" person. His emphasis is on how their sins earn them those descriptions. Solomon writes that a worthless, wicked person uses deceptive speech. In other, more modern terms, we might call this person a scoundrel or a rascal. Others might choose to call this person crooked, a con-artist, or a scammer. He purposely tries to lead people astray by lying to them. Beware of scammers!

He is so subtle. His victim is completely unaware of his intentions until it is too late. Con-artists and frauds use subtle usingsign languages to communicate with their accomplices.

12b He goes with crooked speech,

13 winks with his eyes, signals with his feet,

points with his finger,

14 with perverted heart devises evil,

continually sowing discord;

Prov 10:10 says, "Whoever winks the eye causes trouble," and Prov 16:30 states, "Whoever winks his eyes plans dishonest things."

We are seeing this becoming more apparent today. Paul predicts a time when some will wander from true faith by listening to deceitful false teachers. He states, “Now the Spirit expressly says that in later times some will depart from the faith by devoting themselves to deceitful spirits and teachings of demons, through the insincerity of liars whose consciences are seared,” [1 Tim 4:1-2]

Who is behind these scammers?

There is no doubt about the devil’s role in orchestrating all these for he is the ultimate deceiver. He is the father of lies. [John 8:44] Jesus said the devil "does not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks out of his own character, for he is a liar and the father of lies.” When the devil tempted Eve in the garden of Eden, he lied. Although God had told Adam, "Of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it you shall surely die" [Gen 2:17] , the devil told Eve, "You will not surely die" [Gen 3:4]

Our consolation at the end is for evil men to suffer the consequence of their sins surely.

15 therefore calamity will come upon him suddenly;

in a moment he will be broken beyond healing.

God takes notice of their evil thoughts and actions and eventually brings judgment. This judgment will be sudden and decisive. His punishment will be full and irreversible. In at least one sense, this is guaranteed for all people; those who reject God in this life will suffer eternal destruction in the next. John, in his vision, writes, “Blessed are those who wash their robes, so that they may have the right to the tree of life and that they may enter the city by the gates. Outside are the dogs and sorcerers and the sexually immoral and murderers and idolaters, and everyone who loves and practices falsehood.” (Rev 22:14–15).

Let’s ponder for a moment. Have you embraced Jesus as the truth? [John 14:6] To be scammed with our money is painful for you may still be able to recover your money someday. But, when you are deceived in your soul to believe a lie, it’s eternally disastrous. There is no salvation and freedom apart from Him.[Acts 4:12, John 8:32]
