A FRIEND WHO STICKS CLOSER THAN A BROTHER

In verse 23, Solomon mentions a sad reality about how human nature tends to indulge the wealthy while being impatient with the poor. Those perceived as "poor" often feel they must ask, even literally "beg when speaking with others, while those who are rich might be tempted towards arrogance and derision. We hear this happens when ‘poor’ are seeking services in government offices including hospitals.

Often, when the poor beg for help, people who are well able to respond with help answer the poor with harsh words. Is money neutral? Money can make some people rude, coarse, and cruel in their treatment of less fortunate people. It seems the rich man who appeared indifferent has mistreated the poor man Lazarus. While, the rich man ate luxuriously, Lazarus was allowed only a few scraps from the rich man's table (see Luke 16:19–21).

From a spiritual perspective, this verse can also be interpreted as a contrast between those who are "poor in spirit" versus those who are arrogant. Jesus calls those who recognize they are poor in spirit as blessed. [Mat 5:3]. Those who are arrogant plan their ways without God, whom He abhors. Prov 16:19). Being poor in spirit is a reference to humility: someone who depends on the Lord to meet their needs. He will naturally gravitate towards a gentler, calmer, and patient attitude.

In verse 24, it is not a guarantee that having large numbers of "friends" always means having many deep, committed allies in times of need. This is a reality especially, in social media like Facebook and Instagram. A "man of many companions" suggests a person seeking popularity and shallow relationships. When times are good, those kinds of associates can be a source of pride, or entertainment. But when times are rough, one finds out quickly who their true friends really are. Even a person well-known and popular can find themselves on hard times, made all the harder when their relationships are superficial.

The prodigal son is an example. When he was penniless, he "began to be in need." Consequently, he took a lowly job feeding pigs His plight was so bad that he longed to eat what the pigs ate, but no one gave him anything. (Luke 15:14-16) Where are his friends? When we trust in men, even close to us, we may be disappointed. It is possible that everyone will leave us, but Jesus never. He is the believer's close, true Friend, who promised, "I will never leave you nor forsake you" (Heb 13:5). He is the one who sticks closer, even loves us unconditionally when we are undeserving of his love.[Rom 5:8]

He concludes that wise words are more precious. This valuation of godly wisdom (Proverbs 1:7; 3:1–6) is expressed in numerous ways in the book of Proverbs (Proverbs 3:13–15; 16:16; 22:1). Well-considered, well-timed, well-spoken wisdom is an incredibly valuable gift (Proverbs 8:11; 15:23; 27:9). Jesus is the embodiment of wisdom. Jesus even claimed, "The words that I have spoken to you are spirit and life" (John 6:63). The crowds followed Him to hear what He would say, and it was said that "no one ever spoke like this man" (John 7:46). When Jesus asked His disciples if they would abandon Him, Peter quickly affirmed, "Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life" (John 6:68). Paul describes Jesus as one "in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge" (Colossians 2:3). Jesus has always spoken wisely. He taught with authority about heaven, the value of human life, righteousness, pleasing and glorifying God, and genuine love for God and others. 25.051 | DEAL HONESTLY | Proverbs 20:14 | God’s Word for Today with Pastor Nazario Sinon God’s Word for Today 5 Mar, 2025 “Bad, bad,” says the buyer, but when he goes away, then he boasts. -Prov 20:14 ESV DEAL HONESTLY “The buyer haggles over the price, saying, 'It’s worthless,'then brags about getting a bargain!” [NLT} It's possible for someone to bargain for a low price, only to brag later about what a great deal they got. Or, for a seller to "talk up" something so a buyer spends more on it than they need to. This practice can become dishonest. Deception and lies in business are forms of theft, are they not? Some buyers or sellers overtly deceive a potential transaction. Instead of making a fair-yet-profitable deal, they trick for personal gain. It's cheating as much as are false weights or rigged scale (Prov 20:10, 23). Both stealing and lying violate God's ten commandments, which are "You shall not steal" and "You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor" (Ex 20:14,6). The apostle Paul also points out the evil of stealing and lying. He states: "Therefore, having put away falsehood, let each one of you speak the truth with his neighbor." [Eph 4:25] The apostle implores, "Let the thief no longer steal, but rather let him labor, doing honest work with his own hands." Text: Proverbs 20:13 (ESV) Love not sleep, lest you come to poverty; open your eyes, and you will have plenty of bread. LOVE NOT SLEEP Sleep is a gift from God. [Psa 127:1] Sleep and rest are good (Prov 3:21–24; Ex 16:23–30). However, it could be abused. Loving sleep is equated with laziness. And. Its consequence is disastrous - poverty. (Prov 6:4; 10:4). In contrast, the hardworking person is at much less risk of poverty than the person who is sluggish. However, the person who sleeps when they should work is at risk. Some people prefer to sleep rather than face reality. He presumes everything will be well. “Slothfulness casts into a deep sleep, and an idle person will suffer hunger.” (Prov 19:15). A common symptom of severe depression is unusual sleepiness or fatigue. But the reality is that God-honoring work is both therapeutic and essential. God mandated man to work and be productive. He said to Adam and Eve, “Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth and subdue it, and have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over every living thing that moves on the earth.”[Gen 2:27] The apostle Paul actively engaged in work. He was a tentmaker. He was contented but not passive like a lazy man. [Phil 4:11-13] He told the elders of the church at Ephesus, "I coveted no one's silver or gold or apparel. You yourselves know that these hands ministered to my necessities and to those who were with me. Text: Proverbs 20:12 (ESV) 12The hearing ear and the seeing eye, the Lord has made them both. THE HEARING EAR AND THE SEEING EYE The Creator designed mankind with the ability to both see and hear. Two pairs of eyes and ears are designed for us to obtain knowledge. Thus, we need to pursue truth diligently - in all forms and by all means. Like unearthing gold and silver, we must dig deeper to discover truth. (Prov 2:1–5; 11:27) This emphasizes the idea of "cautious skepticism," which means gathering-in all information before making a judgment (Acts 17:11; 1 John 4:1; Gal 1:8). Like the Bereans, they spend more time digging the Scriptures before believing Paul’s teaching. How a person interprets what they perceive is crucial (Rom 1:18–20). The previous verse noted that how a person acts speaks to their character—such evidence should be carefully noted (Mat 7:16–20; 1 Cor 6:9–13). Paul predicted that the time was coming "when people will not endure sound teaching, but having itching ears they will accumulate for themselves teachers to suit their own passions" (2 Tim 4:3). In other words, they will follow teachers who tell them what they want to hear instead of what they need to hear. Jesus identified true believers as those who hear His voice and follow Him. He said, “o him the gatekeeper opens. The sheep hear his voice, and he calls his own sheep by name and leads them out. 4 When he has brought out all his own, he goes before them, and the sheep follow him, for they know his voice.” (John 10:3–4). There is a need to carefully consider what a person exposes their eyes and ears to. Paul exhorts, “Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things. 9 What you have learned and received and heard and seen in me—practice these things, and the God of peace will be with you.” (Phil 4:8–9). A person can spend time either looking or listening to good things or evil. Either we focus on the things that are uplifting or things that are morally destructive. Text: Prov 20:10-11 ESV 10 Unequal weights and unequal measures are both alike an abomination to the LORD. 11 Even a child makes himself known by his acts, by whether his conduct is pure and upright. -Prov 20:10-11 ESV HONESTY Theft and dishonesty are detestable before the holy God. (Ex 20:15; Prov 6:16–19). The practice of cheating in business here is portrayed as the use of deceptive measurements. A buyer is made to believe that the weight he used is right. But, this crooked seller is using two different sets of weights. He switched both without his knowledge. The Hebrew phrase literally says something like "weights and weights, measures and measures," calling such things despicable in God's eyes. It's one clear example of the charge made in verse 9 by Solomon that no one is pure and clean from sin. (see v. 9). For greed of wealth, cheating in business has always been a practice for mankind. This can involve literal weights or scales tampered. The same sentiment is repeated in verse 23, with additional emphasis on using deceptive scales. It also applies to any form of deception, whether it relies on physical tricks or corrupt record-keeping. The Lord always sees the transaction. Nothing is hidden from His eyes. (Heb 4:13). No one can cheat and escape God's notice and judgment. All dishonest transactions are an "abomination" to Him. Honesty is revealed by the acts of people including children. “Even a child makes himself known by his acts, by whether his conduct is pure and upright.” [v.11] A dishonest person may claim he is honest but his deeds may reveal the opposite. It should be cultivated in the lives of children. Text: Prov 20:8-9 ESV 8 A king who sits on the throne of judgment winnows all evil with his eyes. 9 Who can say, “I have made my heart pure; I am clean from my sin”? -Prov 20:8-9 ESV GOD’S JUSTICE & MAN’S IMPERFECTION It is the ideal for kings to exercise equity and justice. “It is an abomination to kings to do evil, for the throne is established by righteousness.”(Prov 16:12). The role of "king" should be grounded in godliness and justice (Prov 8:12–15; 14:34; 29:14). Solomon is speaking firsthand as a king himself. He had been given a special dose of wisdom from God (1 Kings 3:9–12). His eyes could separate those telling the truth from those who were lying. Here, this is compared to the "winnowing" process whereby the grain is separated from the chaff. Jesus is the Judge (James 5:9). In Matthew 25:31–46, Jesus will judge the nations during His Second coming.. As the all-knowing, all-seeing, and all-wise Judge, He will divide believers from unbelievers, rewarding His people and punishing those who reject Him. The book of Revelation shows readers the great white throne judgment. When this takes place, all unbelievers throughout history will be appropriately tried for their sins and cast into the lake of fire. While earthly judges have finite knowledge and are subject to error, Jesus has infinite knowledge and cannot make a mistake. His judgment is flawless—there will one day be a perfect "winnowing" of all evil. He knows all men.[John 2:25] The next verse is a question based upon the truth that God is the perfect Judge. It's possible for a person to be "blameless" in the sense that others could not find reasons to criticize their morals (Job 1:1; Psa 15:1–2; Luke 1:6; Phil 2:15; Titus 1:6–7). But, can a person claim that he is morally perfect in the eyes of God? Definitely, not! His heart is deceitful. [Jer 17:9] All are sinners. (Rom 3:23). Purity in God's sight cannot be achieved by any man. It comes only to those who believe on Jesus Christ as their Savior (John 3:36). He is the only sinless man (Heb 4:15). His sacrifice at the cross is sufficient payment for the sins of the whole world (1 John 2:2). Yet only those who accept Him as Savior receive forgiveness and cleansing (John 3:16–18). Revelation 1:5 ascribes praise to Christ as the one "who loves us and has freed us from our sins by his blood." God’s Word for Today 27 Feb, 2025 7The righteous who walks in his integrity —blessed are his children after him! -Prov 20:7 ESV INTEGRITY AND ITS BENEFITS As he wrote this proverb, Solomon may have been reflecting on his father, David. (Proverbs 10:1) David was known as a man who "walked in" integrity (1 Kings 3:6). As one of David's sons, Solomon was blessed. The Lord granted Solomon a peaceful, prosperous kingdom and great wisdom. The example of a godly and righteous parent brings many benefits. (Prov 1:7; 3:1–6) Wisdom from God makes a family less prone to risks and failures in life (Prov 8:35–36; 10:9). It promotes one's reputation in the eyes of others (Prov 3:35; 20:3). Nurturing children with proper wisdom sets them up for success in life ((Prov 13:24;19:18). Joseph must have led his son Jesus with his godly example. Although Joseph was not Jesus' biological father, he acted as His father, and was known for being fair and honorable at the start. (Luke 1:31–35; Mat 1:19). It was awkward situation for him when of his betrothed wife Mary became pregnant. Yet, Joseph obeyed God's command to take Mary as his wife (Mat 1:20–25). Later on, when God commanded him to take Mary and Jesus to Egypt, he obeyed without hesitation. Later, when Herod died, an angel commanded Joseph to take the family back to Israel, he again obeyed right away (Mat2:13–23). Undoubtedly, as a man whose life demonstrated a pattern of honoring God's will, Joseph set a good example for the boy Jesus. Jesus grew up and has "increased in wisdom and in stature and in favor with God and man" (Luke 2:52). Moreover, Jesus learned from him to work diligently the carpentry trade. God’s Word for Today 26 Feb, 2025 6 Many a man proclaims his own steadfast love, but a faithful man who can find? 7The righteous who walks in his integrity —blessed are his children after him! -Prov 20:6,7 ESV A FAITHFUL MAN WHO CAN FIND? Solomon pointed out earlier that "mere talk" does not benefit anyone (Prov 14:23). As the English expression is that "talk is cheap." Many people brag about the wonderful things they will do. That includes declaring their loyalty and friendship to others. But when times become hard, and friendship requires sacrifice, many people suddenly disappear. However, a true friend loves at all times (Prov 17:17) he is a friend who sticks closer than a brother. [Prov 18:24). In other words, Solomon has highlighted the rarity of a person whose loyalty lives up to their "big talk." Rarely does anyone find someone who fully keeps their word, showing loyalty to God and others. Let us learn from the apostle Peter. Having a big mouth was his weakness. He bragged that he was willing to fight and die for Jesus (John 13:36–38). To his credit, he tried to fight (John 18:10) before fleeing away (Matthew 26:56), but then he lied out of fear when his loyalty to Christ was tested (Mat 26:69–75). Certainly, believers can depend upon Jesus. He keeps His word and love them unconditionally. He cannot lie, can He? (Titus 1:2). He is the truth! (John 14:6). Furthermore, He will always love us. In John 13:1, John tells us, "Now before the Feast of the Passover, when Jesus knew that his hour had come to depart out of this world to the Father, having loved his own who were in the world, he loved them to the end." Paul adds this assurance by saying, “ Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or danger, or sword? 36 As it is written, “For your sake we are being killed all the day long; we are regarded as sheep to be slaughtered.” 37 No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. 38 For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, 39 nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.”[Rom 8:38–39] He is our only loyal friend who will never leave us or forsake us. Text: Proverbs 20:5 (ESV) 5 The purpose in a man's heart is like deep water, but a man of understanding will draw it out. DRAWING THE HEART OUT When something is sunken lying under at sea bed, it is harder to access, difficult to see, and requires more effort to bring up, is it not? Similarly, Solomon is using this picture in one or more ways to describe the heart of man- his desires and motives. Human desires and motives are unclear, even to the person himself. But, a wise person can draw them out of himself through careful thought and prayer. A counselor or coach may be able to help the person in the counseling process. These motives, intentions, thoughts, and expectations can sometimes be discerned by the help of an ordinary person who is wise. In the body of Christ, he has gifted individuals with wisdom and knowledge who minister to others, by guiding them into drawing out their motives and inner desires. These motives and desires in a person's heart need to conform to God's standards and plans. God does not leave us helpless but gives us the Spirit. He searches the heart and convicts believers of sin, and whatever is contrary to God's standards and plans. He helps believers know the truth. John says, “But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you.” (John 14:26) “But when the Helper comes, whom I will send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth, who proceeds from the Father, he will bear witness about me.”[John 15:26] 13 When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth, for he will not speak on his own authority, but whatever he hears he will speak, and he will declare to you the things that are to come. 14 He will glorify me, for he will take what is mine and declare it to you. 15 All that the Father has is mine; therefore I said that he will take what is mine and declare it to you.”[John 16:13–15). Paul writes in 1 Cor 2:11–13, "For who knows a person's thoughts except the spirit of that person, which is in him? So also no one comprehends the thoughts of God except the Spirit of God. Now we have received not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, that we might understand the things freely given us by God. And we impart this in words not taught by human wisdom but taught by the Spirit, interpreting spiritual truths to those who are spiritual." At the end of the day, this ability to help is not inherent to the person but from the Spirit. A person who is controlled by the Spirit, who makes him wise to counsel others. LAZINESS LEADS TO LACK Not all lack are caused by laziness. but, more often than not, is is caused by laziness. He is not physically unable to do what needs to be done. He simply lacks the desire to work. Once again Solomon decries laziness. This follows many similar warnings and commands in the book of Proverbs such as Proverbs 6:9; 12:24; and 18:9). Laziness is placed into to an embarrassing joke or mockery, as Solomon portrays in Proverbs 19:24. A lazy puts himself at greater risk of poverty (Prov 14:23; 20:13). A mark of laziness is the lack of foresight. He has a 'mañana' habit. He fails to work at the proper time, that is, to prepare now for future needs. This relates to the idea of planting so that one can harvest crops later. the lazy who don't plow won't bring in food. He who doesn't work now will find themselves in need before long. Text: Prov 20:2-3 ESV 2 The terror of a king is like the growling of a lion; whoever provokes him to anger forfeits his life. 3 It is an honor for a man to keep aloof from strife, but every fool will be quarreling. -Prov 20:2-3 ESV STAY AWAY FROM TROUBLE A person should know how to gauge a situation and act accordingly, shouldn’t he? This is common sense. Not all authority figures are good and acts they do are right. A wise person, therefore, avoids antagonizing them unless it is unavoidable (Acts 5:29). Provoking a king to anger is like disturbing a lion. A ruler's anger, or "terror," is a warning as is the lion's growl or roar. Definitely, this is a foolish act when done to kings in the past. They had the absolute authority to execute those who made them unhappy (Gen 40:20–22). Today, a person can be subject to all sorts of trouble at the hands of angered governments, employers, or other authority figures. Paul explains that everyone should be subject to governing authorities, in general, since God established them for a reason.[ Rom 13:1–5 ] Corruption and abuse are expected to happen. However, in general, governments serve to restrain evil and protect the innocent. While political authorities pass civil laws that should be obeyed, there are also other authority figures to whom we are subject. A father is an authority figure and has the power to punish a disobedient child. A teacher has the authority to instruct his or her students and to give failing grades to those who refuse to learn. A policeman has the authority to arrest lawbreakers. A wise person will not provoke an authority figure to anger unless it's unavoidable. Solomon added, “It is to one’s honor to avoid strife.”[v.2a NIV] "Honor" often refers to reputation, as well as respect. He knows what, when, and how to say that gains respect from others and promotes his reputation. Not every argument is worth having, is it not? Thus, he chooses his battles carefully. Solomon noted that a person who knows when to be quiet could be seen as wise, even if he's not (Prov 17:28). Avoiding petty squabbles is the mark of a wise person. It earns the respect of others. In contrast, fool is quick to quarrel. He is hot-tempered, argumentative, or easily angered. Solomon says, “The person who lacks self-control might talk themselves into a beating.” (Prov 18:6). In dealing with people including authority figures, we must be wise as serpents and harmless as doves. Let’s keep our hearts in check. Text: Prov 20:1 ESV 1 Wine is a mocker, strong drink a brawler, and whoever is led astray by it is not wise. -Prov 20:1 ESV WINE AND WISDOM This Hebrew term for ‘wine’ refers to alcohol derived from grapes, as well as stronger drinks made from grains and other fruits. The risk of addiction, loss of self-control, and other dangers are why those who overuse alcohol are unwise. This may imply that a person engaging in drunkenness will not "become wise. His life will be ruined by drinking. It is personified as a ‘mocker’ and a ‘brawler’. Scripture does not forbid the drinking of alcohol. But, drunkenness is a sin. Paul says, “ And do not get drunk with wine, for that is debauchery, but be filled with the Spirit.”(Eph 5:18) He added, “Let us walk properly as in the daytime, not in orgies and drunkenness, not in sexual immorality and sensuality, not in quarreling and jealousy.(Rom 13:13). Drunkenness could lead to other egregious sins. Numerous examples from the Bible show what happens when a person loses self-control due to alcohol. Two examples are Noah (Gen 9:21) and Lot. (Gen 19:33). In the New Testament, the apostle Paul endorsed the use of wine for medicinal purposes. He told the sick Timothy, "No longer drink only water, but use a little wine for the sake of your stomach and your frequent ailments" (1Tim 5:23). The book of Proverbs is replete with warnings against the abuse of the use of wine, to wit; 20 Be not among drunkards or among gluttonous eaters of meat, 21 for the drunkard and the glutton will come to poverty, and slumber will clothe them with rags. [Proverbs 23:20–21] 29 Who has woe? Who has sorrow? Who has strife? Who has complaining? Who has wounds without cause? Who has redness of eyes? 30 Those who tarry long over wine; those who go to try mixed wine. 31 Do not look at wine when it is red, when it sparkles in the cup and goes down smoothly. 32 In the end it bites like a serpent and stings like an adder. 33 Your eyes will see strange things, and your heart utter perverse things. 34 You will be like one who lies down in the midst of the sea, like one who lies on the top of a mast. 35 “They struck me,” you will say, “but I was not hurt; they beat me, but I did not feel it. When shall I awake? I must have another drink. [Prov 21:29–35] 4 It is not for kings, O Lemuel, it is not for kings to drink wine, or for rulers to take strong drink, 5 lest they drink and forget what has been decreed and pervert the rights of all the afflicted. [Prov 31:4–5] There is a great probability that a persistent drunkard is not saved. Paul says, “ ..nor thieves, nor the greedy, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God.”[1 Cor 6:10] He even warns us not to associate with a drunkard.[1 Cor 5:11]. God’s Word for Today 20 Feb, 2025 28 A worthless witness mocks at justice, and the mouth of the wicked devours iniquity. 29 Condemnation is ready for scoffers, and beating for the backs of fools. -Prov 19:28-29 ESV A SAD RESULT OF CONDEMNATION A worthless witness mocks at justice. His testimony is corrupt to bring shame to parents.[Prov 10:1] The concept of a "false witness" in Scripture primarily refers to legal settings. However, the idea here applies to all cases of dishonesty. This kind of evil person commits what modern courts call "perjury" and acts as if justice is a joke. This attitude is associated with those who indulged in sin (Prov 2:11–15; 6:12–15). There were false witnesses who appeared at Jesus' trials and brought untrue accusations against Him (Mat 26:59–61). Judas, who betrayed Jesus. He helped the enemies to falsely accuse Him for thirty pieces of silver. In the end, Judas became remorseful and threw the thirty pieces of silver into the temple and hanged himself (Matthew 27:3–6). A scoffers action has dire consequence both in this life and eternity. Condemnation and beating awaits him. Whether literal or figurative, those who insist on acting foolishly are inviting disaster (Prov 10:13; 18:6). They might suffer legal consequences, social or personal harm, or even death. Worst of all, such attitudes put them at odds with the Lord, who will hold them accountable. God's judgment will fall towards sinners unless they repent their sin and believe on Jesus (John 3:16–18, 36). The apostle Paul warned the Athenians that God "has fixed a day on which he will judge the world in righteousness by a man whom he has appointed; and of this he has given assurance to all by raising him from the dead" (Acts 17:31). Some of the Athenians, like the fools mentioned in Proverbs 19:29, mocked Paul's words, but "some men joined him and believed" (Acts 17:34). The lines are drawn in similar fashion today. Some mock the message of the gospel, but some believe. Those who refuse will face eternal punishment (Rev 20:10–15), but those who believe will receive and enjoy eternal life (John 3:16; Romans 6:23; 8:1). God’s Word for Today 19 Feb, 2025 25 Strike a scoffer, and the simple will learn prudence; reprove a man of understanding, and he will gain knowledge. 26 He who does violence to his father and chases away his mother is a son who brings shame and reproach. 27 Cease to hear instruction, my son, and you will stray from the words of knowledge. -Prov 19:25-27 ESV THE KEY TO PRUDENCE It is sad that a person does spiral down towards hardening of his heart like a scoffer. A "scoffer" is a person who arrogantly, deliberately refuses to accept wisdom. This is the person who sneers at godliness and common sense, making fun of truth instead of learning from it. Even when he is literally beaten, through any consequence or affliction, he may not learn. It is pathetic sight, is it not? The simple who sees the life of the scoffer may learn. The ‘simple’ is someone inexperienced or uneducated. Someone who is ignorant but willing to learn. This means that when fools suffer consequences, wise people learn from their example, and when you correct a wise person, they learn from the experience." Even the naïve can learn when they see what happens to foolish people. The disaster in other people's lives become unfortunate warnings, so we may say, "you don't want to end up like that person, do you?" This is even true to the ‘man of understanding’ He should be ready to change when they are corrected. He is the prudent son. An understanding believer knows that discipline aids spiritual growth and responds accordingly.[Heb 12:10] The capacity to learn from experience never ends when a person is truly wise. (see v.:27). The disaster we are talking about is the ‘shame and reproach’ experienced by the unruly child. ”Children who mistreat their father or chase away their mother are an embarrassment and a public disgrace.”[v.26NLT] Such maltreatment offends not only his parents and society but also God. God commanded the people of Israel to honor their fathers and mothers (Ex 20:12). By disobeying this commandment and driving his mother away, a violent son leaves her poverty-stricken. However, he does not get off without punishment. He brings shame and disgrace to himself. In Exodus 21:17 commands Israel: "Whoever curses his father or his mother shall be put to death." That civil penalty, in the context of the ancient nation of Israel, reflects the serious sin of abusing one's parents. Let’s shepherd the hearts of our kids. Teachable kids grow to become wiser and prudent. They listen and obey God’s instruction. This is the key to prudence.
