God Is Holy

Holiness is the most prominent of the attributes of God. It is the one attribute that is used in a threefold manner as seen in Isaiah 6:1-3 and Revelation 4:8-11. It is often used in connection with other attributes such as love.When we think of God as holy our tendency is to understand it like we use it to refer to people. But this is the wrong place to start. As a principle of the correct understanding of the vocabulary use in the Bible or any book we must consider how it is first used. This will give us a key to its basic and then developing use. The word holy is first used in Genesis 2:1-4 Thus the heavens and the earth were finished, and all the host of them. 2 And on the seventh day God finished his work that he had done, and he rested on the seventh day from all his work that he had done. 3 So God blessed the seventh day and made it holy, because on it God rested from all his work that he had done in creation.Exodus 3: 4 When the Lord saw that he turned aside to see, God called to him out of the bush, "Moses, Moses!" 5 Then he said, "Do not come near; take your sandals off your feet, for the place on which you are standing is holy ground."The meaning is separate, apart, in a category exclusive. This was true of the completion of creation at end of 6 days. God's rest was the rejoicing in the completed work as Creator. This is not a commandment for mankind but a narrative of God's action.
