Has there ever been a time when you found yourself in a group of people enjoying themselves and you felt utterly alone? Maybe unseen, certainly not noticed, no one knew what you were feeling, there was no one to relate to. It’s like going to a party, that for you ends up being a test of endurance, not the fun it was supposed to be. That’s at the heart of Hannah’s story, found in 1 Samuel 1:1-20.
It’s story that starts out in misery, but it ends in rejoicing.
So let’s take a look at the outline of Hannah’s account.
I Context, 1 Samuel 1:1-3
God rejoices both in being generous and sharing joy with us.
II Crisis, 1 Samuel 1:4-8
It is possible to be right with God and wronged by others.
III Catharsis, 1 Samuel 1:9-18
God may have plans to do something through your pain that goes much farther than your own life.
IV Consummation, 1 Samuel 1:19-20
Pain is only the middle of the story God is writing, the joy is yet to come.
