Economically, China and the United States are the two most important superpowers in the world – and now they are involved in an escalating trade war. Does this make sense? Tom Watkins has held a wide variety of important jobs in Michigan, from Director of the State Department of Health to State Superintendent of Schools, but he is now devoting himself to his greatest passion – building better ties in both business and education between China and the United States. He lives in both countries, and has been traveling to China was many years; he was in Tiananmen Square during the violence 30 years ago. Bernard Swiecki is assistant director of the Center for Automotive Research (CAR) in Ann Arbor, and has led trade missions to China as well as other countries, and is the co-author of a major report earlier this year on the economic impacts of US trade policies on the automotive industry.
