In 2 Samuel 24:10-16, we find a profound example of how a leader’s decisions can have far-reaching consequences on those they lead. King David, prompted either by his own pride or influenced by others, ordered a census of Israel’s fighting men. This decision, though seemingly administrative, displeased God because it reflected a reliance on human strength rather than divine providence.
David’s conscience was struck after the census, and he confessed, “I have sinned greatly in what I have done.” This demonstrates that leaders are not immune to mistakes but are held to higher accountability because their actions influence others.
When God presented David with three options for judgment—famine, fleeing from enemies, or a plague—David chose to fall into the hands of God, acknowledging His mercy. The plague that followed caused the death of 70,000 people.
