With the outbreak and spread of the Coronavirus, federal, state and local governments have enacted numerous restrictions aimed at protecting the public from the spread of this new contagion, but do they all hit the target? New Orleans Mayor, Latoya Cantrell recently announced a state of emergency which allows her to suspend the sale of firearms within the city. Can she fire off such an order? Is it a public safety bulls eye, or does it miss the target completely? How does such an order protect people during an emergency? Does this regulation violate the Second Amendment? Further, can local and state leaders violate your civil rights just because something bad has happened? As one of our favorite law school professors once said, "That depends..."
