Every year wild boar cause an estimated 1.8 billion dollars in damage to farms, lawns, and natural areas, primarily in the southern United States. Experts contend the roaming swine also carry a number of diseases that could infect commercial herds and seriously threaten pork producers. In recent years, rogue populations have sprung up in Michigan, where boar were brought in for commercial hunting. It’s now estimated that as many as 3,000 pigs are on the loose in Michigan, with most believed to be escapees from about 30 commercial hunting facilities. So recently, officials at Michigan’s DNR -- the Department of Natural Resources -- took action to get a handle on their “pig problem” before it spirals out of control.
