We kick off our new season with "Rebirth." Rebirth is an interesting concept in medicine because, for patients, it means one thing. It can mean the patient who hits rock bottom and is finally ready to make a change in their lives. It can mean a new organ in a patient, a literal rebirth for both the donor and the receiver. From the physician side, though, it's a bit different. Some cases, patients, and moments really catapult us into a rebirth because it jars your understanding of yourself and medicine so profoundly. Sometimes it's as simple as advancing your training. Who you are as a medical student is different from who you are as a resident, which is different from who you are as an attending. We are all constantly morphing. Here are three stories, which capture moments of rebirth from three very different physicians: Chapter One. Woman, MD > Panic and Prejudice (03:05): Amy must prove to a patient’s loved one that she actually is an MD, in a moment that solidifies her own confidence as an emergency medicine physician. Story told by Amy Khong, MD. Chapter Two. Child DNR Agony (13:35): Treating a child at death's door, Anastassios is caught between parents who flip-flop on DNR instructions. Story told by pediatrician Anastassios Koumbourlis, MD. Chapter Three. My Best Failure Ever (22:30): Brant fails big time, but then through an unexpected babysitting gig, his perspective on medicine and his love life change forever. Story told by Brant Mittler, MD, JD.
