PlăcutWhen a young Eva Kollisch arrives as a refugee in New York in 1940, she finds a community among socialists who share her values and idealism. She soon discovers ‘the cause’ isn’t as idyllic as it seems. Little does she know this is the beginning of a lifelong commitment to activism and her determination to create radical change in ways that include belonging, love and one's full self. In addition to Eva Kollisch’s memoirs Girl in Movement (2000) and The Ground Under My Feet (2014), LBI’s collections include an oral history interview with Eva conducted in 2014 and the papers of Eva’s mother, poet Margarete Kolllisch, which document Eva’s childhood experience on the Kindertransport. He is the author of two books – Real Theatre: Essays in Experience (published in 2019) and Theatre & Human Rights (published in 2009) and is currently working on two others. Alongside Kaylene Tan, Paul was co-director of the Singapore-based theatre company Spell Seven Performance Club. He has a wealth of experience in contemporary theatre practices both in Melbourne and overseas. Here, in an interview recorded over Zoom during the Covid-19 pandemic, he shares his understanding of how a city, particularly its urban landscape and design, affects the production and reception of theatre and other live performance. __ This interview was produced by MTC Education as part of Melbourne Knowledge Week. MTC Education provides audiences with insight into the theatre making processes used at MTC to produce its world class theatre productions. Kaylene Tan is a theatre maker from Singapore with a large body of performance, audio and site-specific theatre work. She has been the recipient of numerous fellowships for her work as a writer, director and performer. Alongside Paul Rae, she was co-director of the theatre company, Spell Seven - a performance company with a distinctive and inventive focus on the ways history, culture and politics intersect in everyday life through intimate theatrical performances and environmental sound works.
