Wisconsin Dairy Sheep Influence A National Industry

Even though the dairy sheep program at the Spooner Agricultural Research Station came to a close in 2016, dairy sheep producers in Wisconsin are still working to improve genetics to grow sheep dairy and processing capacity across the U.S. Mariana Marques de Almeida at Ms. J & Co. is one example. She is truly a woman of all trades – co-founder of the business, an animal scientist, a cheesemaker, and a breeder. At the sheep dairy farm in Monroe, she and her business partner raise 800 Assaf sheep. This is a breed she brought into the United States nearly a decade ago. It’s her goal to expand the dairy sheep industry in the United States. And she says it’s now possible with the improved genetics of her Assaf sheep.
