Human skin is a complex, dynamic, and essential organ that serves critical functions for health and survival. As the interface between our bodies and the external environment, skin plays a vital role in protection, sensation, temperature regulation, excretion, and more. In this blog post, we’ll explore the anatomy, physiology, and functions of the different layers of skin. An Overview of Skin Structure and Function Human skin is composed of three main layers: the epidermis, dermis, and hypodermis (Table 1). These layers vary in structure, function, and composition but work synergistically to carry out the skin’s many jobs. Table 1. The Layers of Human Skin LayerMajor FunctionsKey ComponentsEpidermis | Protection, waterproofing, pigmentation | Keratinocytes, melanocytes Dermis | Cushioning, strength, elasticity | Collagen, elastin Hypodermis | Insulation, energy storage | Adipose tissueSome of the skin’s primary functions include: Protecting the body from external harms like pathogens, chemicals, and radiationSensation through an extensive network of nerve endingsRegulating body temperature via blood flow, sweat, and goosebumpsSynthesizing vitamin D through sunlight exposureStorage, synthesis, and excretion of compoundsWaterproofing to prevent excess fluid lossImmunological surveillance to monitor threatsSelf-renewal and regeneration of damaged tissueTo carry out these critical jobs, the skin relies on the coordinated efforts of its structural layers along with associated glands and cell types. Next, we’ll explore those layers in greater detail. Read more: https://miraridoctor.com/blog/skin/
