According to Forbes Magazine, public speaking is the number one fear of the average person. So why would a person willingly pursue this career path? Lucky for us all, Mayra Ferreira of Tampa, FL agreed to sit down with No Offense Magazine to answer a few questions. The time spent was very rewarding as we got to know Ms. Ferreira in-depth. As the title of this article suggests, it was definitely worth hearing.
“If you have something to say, someone needs to hear it…..You don’t know how many people you really can touch when you don’t let that fear hold you back,” Mayra answers. But before we dive into that, let’s get to know a little bit about Ms. Ferreira. Raised on Long Island, New York, she is the first generation born of immigrant parents, who came from the Dominican Republic.“My father truly built and kind of walked on the path of that American dream. He came to the States as an immigrant, did the right thing, was super responsible, had the jobs, you know, when needed, built a life in the suburbs, was married, never divorced, you know, he treated my mom like a queen. And he was able to actually leave something for my brother, and me, you know, and he made a lot of the right choices. He was an example in so many ways. My mother, she’s my only living parent right now. And just the way that she’s been my rock and the way that she’s always supported me and been there for me, and still always pushing and pushing forward….I would love to just ….bless her!” Mayra made the decision to move to the Tampa, FL area, as a young adult back in 2004. She also speaks Spanish, making her a proud, bilingual woman of Latin culture. “I love the sazón we bring to the table. I think that sums it up,” she explains cheerfully.
It is very hard to not notice how well she speaks. One thing that stands out immediately is her ability to well-articulate her thoughts. As mentioned earlier, most people experience, even if it is very small, some amount of anxiety when expressing their ideas and thought patterns, leading to the overuse of words and sounds like “um”, and “like,” many times in their speaking. I know this firsthand as I catch myself doing this. They are telling signs of nervousness. Ms. Mayra, on the other hand, expresses her ideas exceptionally well, with no rush or delay. Her responses are well thought out and executed. She is in her element. It is easy to see why she thrives in her profession.
