På 1800-tallet passerte en prest en ølkneipe i Tyskland. Fra innsiden av baren kom et rop, en rusten stemme som sa: «Es gibt keinen Gott – Det fins ingen Gud». Presten var ikke sikker på om han hadde hørt rett, så han snudde seg og gikk inn i baren. Han var ikke kommet mer enn tre skritt forbi dørterskelen før setningen lød en gang til.
