In this latest OIES podcast, brought to you by the Gas Programme, James Henderson talks to Kong Chyong about his latest paper which provides a stress test of Europe’s shift from Russian gas to renewables using a global energy model. After discussing the methodology behind Kong’s analysis they consider some of the critical components which can provide resilience to the European energy system, especially in extreme events and look at how the generation mix has become increasingly reliant on LNG in extreme weather scenarios. The conversation then moves on to the way in which storage dynamics have evolved given the loss of flexibility that had been provided by Russian gas contracts, and the importance of interconnections within Europe is also discussed. Finally, the podcast considers the role of other fuels such as coal and nuclear in providing back-up to the growing role of wind and solar and assesses the impact on CO2 emissions.
