S2E11 - Creating From Your Own Experience w/ Jay Kamal
Manage episode 345346750 series 3409306
In the wake of his father’s death, a young boy is forced to deal with, and ultimately respect, his mixed family’s Muslim and Christian mourning practices in Lebanese/Canadian filmmaker Jay Kamal’s touching short film Baba.
Baba swept up three awards in CineVic’s 2022 Short Circuit Pacific Rim Film Festival, winning Outstanding Direction, Cinematography, and Performance awards — so, of course, podcast host Joyce Kline just had to find out more from Jay!
- Why did he feel he needed a cultural consultant?
- How does Canadian multiculturalism stack up against Lebanon’s centuries old tradition of religious tolerance?
- What is it about childhood that so fascinates him as a filmmaker?
- And what’s his advice for filmmakers wanting to create films based on their own experience?
Tune in with host Joyce Kline to find out more in the latest episode of Push In: The Cinevic Podcast.
Fun fact:
We sure know how to pick our guests! Jay Kamal’s Baba has just been nominated in four short film categories in the 2022 Leos Awards: Best Drama, Direction, Screenplay and Make Up!
