Lee High School (Jacksonville, Fla.) name change debate, we discuss how the larger "Lost Cause" mythos propagated by the United Daughters of the Confederacy (the UDC), helped spearhead -starting in the late 19th and 20th centuries- the ahistorical brainwashing of generations to genuinely believe the lie about the Confederacy not seceding from the Union to defend and expand the lucrative institution of slavery, but for "state's rights" etc. Follow Radio War Nerd on Social Media and subscribe to RWN on Patreon: @RadioWarNerd on Twitter @TheWarNerd on Twitter @MarkAmesExiled on Twitter https://www.patreon.com/radiowarnerd/posts Follow Redspin Sports on Social Media: @NateWallace9 on Twitter @BrotherFlourish on Twitter @JuiceTinTweets on Twitter @RedspinSports on Twitter @RedspinSports on Instagram redspinsports@gmail.com https://www.facebook.com/RedspinSports Photo Credit- Radio War Nerd ("War Nerd Radio") promo illustration for the podcast affectionately named for John's nickname, "the War Nerd," and co-hosted by Mark Ames. We examine contemporaneous efforts to change the names of schools with Confederate names like Robert E. Lee High School in Jacksonville, Florida, where Nate used to coach and recently spoke in favor of changing the name in the face of older white alumni doing everything in their power to stand in the way. https://www.cnn.com/videos/us/2021/03/25/robert-e-lee-high-school-renaming-jacksonville-florida-orig-jk.cnn/video/playlists/top-news-videos/ https://twitter.com/NateWallace9/status/1375274196335525893?s=20 (checkout this thread for full context) https://www.theatlantic.com/politics/archive/2017/06/the-myth-of-the-kindly-general-lee/529038/ We connect this to the larger "Lost Cause" mythos that the United Daughters of the Confederacy (the UDC) helped spearhead starting in the late 19th and 20th centuries, and led to the ahistorical brainwashing of a few of generations so that they earnestly believe the lie that the Confederacy did not secede from the Union to defend and expand the lucrative institution of slavery -which it did. This history connects to contemporary American sports most notably in the brand of Southern College Football played the the Southeastern Conference (SEC) and to a slightly lesser extent in the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) and Big XII Conference (where Texas and Oklahoma still play). The War Nerd helps connect the romanticizing of defeat that vanquished Confederates and their propagandists engaged with on an epic scale, to the genesis of the type of poetry (James McPherson and later Sir Walter Scott) that romanticizes defeat: the Scottish Highlanders defeat to the English crown at the Battle of Culloden in 1745. White, author of the award-winning book, "Blood, Sweat, and Tears: Jake Gaither, Florida A&M and the History of Black College Football," on HBCU sporting congregations and their significance both historically and present-day. Nate and Prof. White get into a lot of topics from the book and the discussion takes off from there; taking us back in time while also making illuminating connections to how this history is as relevant as ever not just in the world of sport, but also society at large. Prof. Derrick White's Bio: Born and raised in Lexington, Kentucky, I earned my Ph.D. in history from The Ohio State University. I use the lens of black organizational life to examine modern Black history, sports history, and intellectual history. My most recent book, Blood, Sweat, and Tears chronicles the development of black college football in the twentieth century, and is among the first comprehensive histories of black college athletics. Using the biography of Alonzo “Jake” Gaither and the history of the football program at Florida A&M University (FAMU), he shows how black college football and its supporters created successful programs during segregation by relying on a network of athletic enthusiasts in the media, on campuses, and in the community. I have published articles in New Politics, The Journal of African American History, the C.L.R. James Journal, the Journal of African American Studies, and the Florida Historical Quarterly. 16:48In this segment of By Any Means Necessary, hosts Sean Blackmon and Jacquie Luqman are joined by Nate Wallace, co-host of Red Spin Sports podcast for another edition of our weekly segment “The Red Spin Report.” They discuss efforts to remove the name of Confederate general Robert E. Lee from Washington-Lee University in Virginia and Robert E. Lee High School in Jacksonville, Florida, as well as the intellectual bankruptcy of the “Lost Cause” narrative advanced by new-confederate factions. Nate coached high school football for the now (since desegregation & white flight) nearly all black Lee Generals (Jacksonville, Fla.) varsity football team in 2009 & 2010, and he connects how that experience -and the role team sports play more broadly in identity formation for players and alums- affects and complicates the issues of school names & mascots. As always, the social and political contradictions that exist as a natural byproduct of living under a fundamentally exploitative economic system that continues to fuel augmenting income & wealth inequality, are unpacked and explored within the context of the still ongoing battles over appropriately characterizing the Confederate government for what it was -and the logic of its reactionary ideology still is, a criminal enterprise built on naked economic exploitation, an unparalleled system of human trafficking, & the violently enforced bondage of the most basic human rights of enslaved African peoples. The enduring mythos of "The Lost Cause" is a testament to the power of white supremacy in these United States. Why? If not for the -racist decision- to abandon the promises made to emancipated peoples in the form of ending federal military reconstruction in 1877 (a decision long in the making by the time it became official), the militarily, but not necessarily ideologically, vanquished "redeemers of the South" never could have returned to power to institute a Jim Crow system of racialized terror in the 1880's and 1890's. Furthermore, "Lost Cause" propagandists such as the United Daughters of the Confederacy would not have had the political power to advance their ahistorical narratives into K-12 school curriculums across the states of the former Confederacy and beyond; it is precisely because of the UDC's ideological victory in being able to craft racist and classist narratives about the Civil War and what it was truly fought over (i.e. SLAVERY and the "rights" of slavers to expand their "peculiar institution" into the westward and rapidly expanding settler colonial geography of the mid 19th century United States). So the reality is as William Faulkner so accurately put it: "the past is not dead, in fact, it's not even past." Those words couldn't have been more true on Thursday, March 25th, in both the auditorium and overflow crowd in the adjacent library of Robert E. Lee High School in Jacksonville, Fla. Checkout the 90 seconds (I -Nate- could have managed better but was caught off guard after waiting nearly 4 hours to speak) I had to speak on this issue in the tweet below. Despite the self-criticism, it still gets at the core issue: the continued power of the fallacious "Lost Cause" narrative which tries to explain away why the "morally superior" Confederacy was vanquished on the battlefield. Those who ascribe to "Lost Cause" history are invariably delusional, masters of white "grievance politics," acting as if they are somehow "the victims" while ignoring and having contempt for all who dare point out the ahistorical contradictions their arguments rest upon. https://twitter.com/NateWallace9/status/1378023534048514054?s=20 Recorded and aired on Friday, March 26th, 2021 in Washington, DC. 46:30This is a two-part episode. Be on the lookout for Part II to drop on March 18th or 19th. Part I of Nate Wallace's conversation with Professor Derrick E. Follow Professor Derrick White on Twitter: @blackstar1906 Get your Copy of the Book: https://www.amazon.com/Blood-Sweat-Tears-Gaither-Football/dp/1469652447 I was remiss in the intro not to mention that Prof. White's a co-host of "The Black Athlete Podcast" with Grand Valley State University Prof. Louis Moore. They produce amazing content & Redspin Sports encourages everyone to checkout their work (Apple Podcast link below). https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/the-black-athlete/id1454162935 Prof. For the last six years, Haiphong has been a weekly contributor to Black Agenda Report, and now serves as co-editor along with Margaret Kimberly. Danny's book co-authored with Roberto Sirvent is titled: "American Exceptionalism and American Innocence: A People's History of Fake News--From the Revolutionary War to the War on Terror." It is a must read for any U.S. progressive who recognizes U.S. imperialism as the fundamental contradiction keeping all these other systems of oppression in place and plowing ahead with barbaric and deadly sanctions against nations of the Global South that dare challenge U.S. neoliberal hegemony, and its most potent ideological weapon, anti-Communism. On top of all of that, Danny is a former H.S. basketball star in his hometown of Cambridge, Massachusetts, attending the same high school as legends such as Patrick Ewing and the late great Len Bias. Needless to say, when he isn't writing and organizing against U.S. imperialism and advocating for socialism rooted in international solidarity, you can probably catch him watching his beloved Boston Celtics. Derek Silva is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Sociology at King's University College at Western University. Here's his bio in his own words: I co-host a podcast called The End of Sport , which you can find on iTunes, Google Play Music, and Spotify, or simply click the link below for a sneak peek. I teach a number of courses in sociology and criminology, including introductory sociology and criminology, quantitative and qualitative research methods, sociology of sport, sociology of catastrophe, critical security studies, surveillance, and sociology of terrorism. My areas of interest include critical sociology and criminology, sport, punishment, terrorism and ‘radicalization’ studies. Broadly speaking, my research focuses on how we make sense of a variety of social issues and the interventions we craft to alleviate associated harm. More specifically, I have written on Canadian and international counter-radicalization programs, the diffusion of transnational counter-terrorism policing, practices of 'scouting' high school football athletes, and constructions of national identity in response to tragedy, and cultural understandings of crime and punishment in sport. My work can be found in Punishment and Society, Crime, Media, Culture, Sociology of Sport Journal, Sociological Forum, Race & Class, Educational Gerontology, TIME, The Chronicle of Higher Education, The Guardian, The Daily Beast and Jacobin Magazine. In addition to my scholarship, I serve on the editorial board of the Sociology of Sport Journal, as OCUFA Director on King's University College Faculty Association, and am co-editor of Emerald's Sociology of Crime, Law, and Deviance book series. I am currently working on two SSHRC-funded projects. The first is entitled "How radicalization has become the dominant framework for understanding terrorism." This project is funded by a SSHRC Insight Development Grant (2019-2021) and traces the emergence of radicalization as the primary framework for understanding transitions toward political violence. The second, funded by a SSHRC Partnership Engage COVID-19 Initiative Grant (2020-21) looks at how participants in serious leisure activities make sense of the loss of sport during COVID-19 lockdown and how they perceive risk as they return to activity during and after the pandemic. 14:54Former Indiana Hoosiers player and Bob Knight assistant basketball coach, Dan Dakich, who now works for ESPN calling college basketball games and hosting a sports talk radio show on 107.5 FM "The Fan" in Indianapolis. At issue in this installment of Nate Wallace's weekly Redspin Report on Radio Sputnik's "BAMNecessary" with Sean Blackmon and Jacquie Luqman, is Dakich's M.O. of attacking unpaid college athletes for "quitting," calling for Duke Basketball's (unpaid) Jalen Johnson a quitter for making a business decision to prepare for the 2021 NBA Draft, rather than continue playing this money grab of a college basketball season amid the Covid-19 pandemic. Even worse is Dakich's threatening sexual violence against End of Sport co-host and college professor, Johanna Mellis, and doxing fellow EOS co-host and professor Nathan Kalman-Lamb after being unable to respond to legitimate criticism regarding Dakich's latest disgusting remarks. We also discuss the New Cold War against China taking hold in Canada with a mainstream lawmaker's appeal that the 2022 Winter Olympic Games should be moved from China to Canada on human rights grounds concerning an alleged Uyghur Genocide; a claim made only by a right-wing evangelical zealot named Dr. Adrian Zenz, who is a bizarre and dangerous figure from the German Christian Right. https://canadiandimension.com/articles/view/canada-should-not-host-the-olympics-ever Checkout some of the developments that have ensued in the days since we recorded. https://www.usatoday.com/story/sports.. . https://www.newsobserver.com/article2.. . https://thespun.com/more/sports-media.. . https://www.thebiglead.com/posts/dan-.. . https://www.indystar.com/story/sports.. . https://twitter.com/marcisenberg/stat.. . The Jalen Johnson opt-out is a totally legitimate decision the young man made given the fact that "loyalty" is never a two way street whenever a player's presence becomes something a university deems to be not in their interests. The context for the discussion stems from our incredulity at the way in which some of the most far-right elements of the Israel Lobby have exploited the situation Philadelphia Eagles wide receiver Desean Jackson created, and then found himself in the midst of a firestorm as a result, earlier this month when he re-shared anti-Semitic words in an Instagram Story from a sermon delivered by the Nation of Islam's Louis Farrakhan. Far-right Israeli lobby & Bibi Netanyahu P.R. firm, From the Depths, has cynically deployed the MAGA Trump devotee and corrupt New Jersey real estate developer & multi-millionaire, Edward Mosberg, to play a central role in the reeducation and potential "reclamation" of the 33 year-old Jackson. The problem centers around what we've learned about Mosberg and From the Depths founder, Jonny Daniels. Jackson agreeing to be educated on anti-Semitism by From the Depths' frontman, Edward Mosberg, means he'll be learning a lot more about the importance of embracing political Zionism than he will about seriously combatting anti-Semitism. This is evidenced by Mosberg's unabashed praise for the racist politics of Trump and Netanyahu, and From the Depths' record of providing what amounts to Jewish political cover for far-right Eastern European heads of state like Hungarian President, Viktor Orban, and Polish President Andrzej Duda; both of whom benefit greatly from having their domestic anti-Semitism whitewashed by From the Depths thanks to their staunch for Israel on the international stage. In short, opposition to Israel's political Zionist ethnocracy is NOT analogous to anti-Semitism! However, as this Redspin Sports special illustrates, this fact will hardly stop Netanyahu and his From the Depths lackeys from doing all they can to portray the two as being one in the same. The discussion portion of the program was recorded on July 12th, 2020, and was published to YouTube on July 31st, 2020. The Israel Lobby's exploiting the situation Philadelphia Eagles wide receiver Desean Jackson created earlier this month when he re-shared anti-Semitic words in an Instagram Story from a sermon delivered by the Nation of Islam's Louis Farrakhan. Max's critique of Julian Edelman's failure to understand the fundamentally asymmetrical power dynamics at play in his widely played (and praised) offer to take Desean Jackson on a DC museum trip where they visit the Holocaust Museum and the Smithsonian Museum of African-American History. In fact, his critique transcends this particular issue and applies to a much larger social and political context. 1:25:48Esteban Almiron (@taseenb on Twitter) joins Nate Wallace for this 2020 in review episode focused primarily on the perceived threat Diego Maradona posed in the eyes of Western corporate media; and the effects "anti-communism" ideology (the official state ideology of the U.S. empire) has on sport, politics, and progressive people's movements; all of this to ensure that socialist and/or anti-imperialist voices are marginalized, slandered or -if need be- worse. Esteban lives in Buenos Aires, Argentina, but has also lived in Italy during the time of Maradona. He works as a designer and programmer and does investigative reporting into issues dealing with the intersection of big tech & politics. He has worked closely with The Grayzone's Ben Norton on an investigation into the politics that drove the insane Trump-era IMF loan (largest in history) to Argentina; the hope for the U.S. was that Argentina would then assist Washington's efforts to illegally insert Juan Guaido in as president (usurper in chief) of Venezuela. Diego Maradona tragically passed away late in 2020, and this is a way for us to examine the ways in which he was maligned and even posthumously character assassinated by some in the mainstream press. Esteban and Nate get into a range of sport-related topics that connect back to the world of political power, imperialism, people's resistance to empire and much more. https://www.bbc.com/news/world-latin-america-55085947 https://www.usnews.com/news/world/articles/2020-11-25/maradona-football-legend-was-a-champion-of-latin-americas-left Recorded on Saturday, December 19th, 2020. Nate, Mike, & Justin riff on NFL ownership's reactionary fuckery, from Detroit to Houston to Jacksonville (all 32 of 'em TBR), Deshaun Watson demanding a trade from the Houston Texans & how it relates to the Rooney Rule (only TWO Black NFL head coaches remain now), Barstool (I mean Bar Drool) Sports kicking their harassment outfit into high gear in response to National Women's Hockey League's (NWHL), Saroya Tinker leading the struggle against them gaining media credentials (i.e. normalization) from the league, critical analysis right-wing (at least) Fascist adjacent snowflakes like Dave Portnoy fit the profile of the "aggrieved right-winger" inverting reality by making the bully (them) sound like the victim -and using their platform as a megaphone to do it, NBA All Star Game cynical ploy to use HBCU philanthropy as cover to potentially un-cancel the ASG by moving it to Atlanta, potential transformative influence (on college & pro athletes) of LA Chargers running back and socialist activist, Justin Jackson, and much much more. 18:42Nate Wallace, creator and co-host of the podcast Redspin Sports, joins "Political Misfits" to discuss everything we ought to know about paying college athletes, protesting at the Olympics and elsewhere, and the pandemic's impact on youth sports & mental health -particularly the struggles facing US society's most vulnerable students. "Political Misfits" co-host Michelle Witte hosted Nate on Radio Sputnik's Washington, DC based radio program & podcast "Political Misfits" on Wednesday, December 23rd, 2020. Michelle & Nate discuss the US Olympic Committee's (USPOC) continued repression of free speech and political expression rights of US athletes in the wake of US Track & Field star hammer thrower, Gwen Berry's plight, after she raised the same black power solidarity fist as 1968 Olympians Tommie Smith and John Carlos, and like them is facing similar backlash now more than 50 years later. They also discuss the Supreme Court's upcoming ruling on the question of NCAA "student-athletes" (aka unpaid athletic laborers) right to profit off of their own Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL), and why despite NIL being long overdue, it still leaves the issue of direct compensation for athletic labor off the table. Other topics discussed include the dubious Cold War legacy that contextualizes the "patriotism" police's punishment of Gwen Berry, and so many other US Olympians and US athletes across the board. Gender's role in how the public reacts to athletes expressing political dissent is explored in light of Berry's experience, and why the heroic activism of WNBA players offers hope for a more equitable future. Don't forget this is the same Hugh Freeze, whose highly successful run as head coach at Ole Miss came to an ignominious ending following the 2016 season in no small part due to his practice of contracting with escort services on his university issued cell phone while on recruiting trips. 1:22:43Abdul Malik aka @SocialistRaptor (a dope Twitter handle & a great follow btw) joins Redspin Sports' founder Nathaniel (or Nate -it's whatever) Wallace @NateWallace9, to riff on everything from similarities and differences in sporting culture in the U.S. and Canada, his work as a labor/environmental/indigenous rights activist in "oil country" of Edmonton, Alberta (aka "Canada's Texas"), lots of hoops, football (and the differences in the U.S. and Canadian versions of the game) hockey, and of course the central role of sport in the broader labor struggle against neoliberalism's hegemony (albeit with growing cracks in the armor) across North America. We hit on a lot, but expect a Part II because there's much more I regret not getting to this time around. Along with his political and environmental activism, Abdul Malik, is currently new media producer for the Alberta Union of Provincial Employees (AUPE). Abdul's a native of Toronto, Ontario who moved to what is in many ways Canada's "wild west" (to make an historical U.S, pop cultural reference) of Edmonton, Alberta. Unfortunately, "wild west" allusion is still an apt one given the predominance of far-right conservative politics in Canada's Alberta Province. Hence why the power of oil and identity's seemingly inseparable marriage is another topic we definitely hit on in the pod. He is an often published writer and investigative journalist whose work is often featured in Jacobin, Canadian Dimension, and many other progressive media platforms and publications. Checkout a couple recent pieces Abdul's had published just this past week. https://www.jacobinmag.com/2020/12/luxury-sneaker-markets-capitalist-nikes-resale https://canadiandimension.com/articles/view/from-winnipeg-to-tokyo-sports-capitalism-and-the-surveillance-state This CBC (Canadian Broadcasting Corporation) article on the Edmonton-based Hate Free YEG, the radical anti-racist/indigenous rights organization he co-founded, and the Edmonton rally they organized against racism in the city. 1:32:06Mike and Nate reunite to riff on the most pertinent events affecting the world of sports, politics, economics, social issues and more in the context of the insane landscape that is this Covid-19, Neoliberal Hellscape USA. Here are just a few of the issues we analyze, discuss, and even try to have a little fun with -at least as much as it's possible to do so in this time of Covid's resurgence and political cowardice in Washington, DC and state capitals across the U.S. We dive into include the bleak economic outlooks facing college athletic departments, MLB scouts and non-player personnel, and many other athletic organizations coming out of this pandemic. We also look at the example of Utah congressman elect and former Miami Hurricanes and NFL star, Burgess Owens, being elected as the next star black athlete turned right-wing politician for the GOP. The issue of college football coronavirus cancellations being framed by coaches and commentators as "using Covid as an excuse" to "not man up and play ball" is analyzed and explored from all angles. The exodus of Miami, Florida area natives from the Nebraska Cornhuskers' football program is analyzed in light of pandemic college football conditions and what they say about the future of CFB players awakening to the variety of ways in which their bodies and labor are exploited. Western corporate media's awful eulogies following the passing of soccer superstar, international icon and people's champ, Diego Maradona, are analyzed in the context of the class bias and total hypocrisy they reveal. Note: in case you can't tell lol, this is an ironic thumbnail of the NFL's 2020 summed up in this poster promoting -bitter rivals- Baltimore & Pittsburgh's unprecedented Hump Day afternoon kickoff -rather than its scheduled Thanksgiving NBC primetime slot. Quick Commentary: the best critique of the NFL pressing ahead in spite of the pandemic is the injustice of rapid Covid-19 testing's -extraordinarily inconsistent- availability to the public, while the NFL is using up a staggering amount of available resources just to enable the games to go on. It's really a perfect illustration of the ever proliferating wealth gap in the U.S., and the worsening economic and social fragmentation that ensues as a direct result of neoliberal bipartisan consensus. Checkout "Political Misfits" on Radio Sputnik Monday-Friday between Noon & 2 p.m.(EST). Here's more info on Michelle & Bob's great work & their amazing show. "Political Misfits brings you news, politics and culture ‒ without the red and blue treatment. We aim to facilitate constructive conversations that take new looks at the stories and topics that mean a lot to us, including corporate misconduct, anti-war efforts, climate change, political hypocrisy, poverty, pop culture, electoral politics and much, much more. Political Misfits airs live daily Monday through Friday from 12-2 p.m. EST and is broadcast on 105.5 FM in Washington, DC, 102.9 FM in Kansas City, Missouri, and to 35 countries on signals such as FM, digital DAB/DAB+ (Digital Radio Broadcasting), and HD-Radio. The show is also made available globally live on SputnikNews.com and is distributed as a podcast shortly after broadcasting on iTunes, iHeartRadio, Spreaker and more. About us: Hosts Bob Schlehuber and Michelle Witte bring different backgrounds to Political Misfits, but arrive with a mutual curiosity and compassion. Bob is an artist, producer and organizer; someone who works to create conversations that bring together broad and diverse individuals, organizations and ideas. Bob produced the radio show By Any Means Necessary on Radio Sputnik for the past three years; now, he's bringing his commitment to understanding and addressing housing, homelessness, public safety, education, health, workforce development, civility, mutual understanding, and international peace and conflict resolution to Political Misfits. Michelle is a committed explorer, observer and documenter of our big, beautiful planet and the strange creatures that inhabit it. A long-time writer, teacher and journalist, she returned to the US after ten years overseas with a broader perspective on American politics and culture and our impact on the world. 16:08In this segment of By Any Means Necessary, hosts Sean Blackmon and Jacquie Luqman are joined by Nate Wallace, co-host of Red Spin Sports podcast, for another edition of our new weekly segment “The Red Spin Report." They discuss the implications of the University of New Mexico having relocated its entire NCAA football team to Las Vegas to circumvent New Mexico COVID-19 restrictions, the lasting consequences of NBA GM Daryl Morey's incendiary comments about Hong Kong, and how the NBA is working to repair its frayed ties with Chinese fans following the incident last year. The role of grassroots basketball diplomacy taking place between players from the U.S. and China is explored, and its potential to foster solidarity in the face of the usual suspects of DC think-tankers ramping up their warmongering rhetoric as a hail mary to try and stop the immoveable force that is China's rise as a rival superpower to the U.S. on the global stage. The Beijing museum dedicated to Brooklyn, NY hoops legend Stephon Marbury is discussed in this context, along with comments by Allen Iverson (AI aka The Answer), and finally the utter buffoonery of Jason Whitlock's ridiculous commentary on Black Lives Matter, "anti-Americanism," and red meat doses of China-bashing. 1:51:44Listener Note: Skip ahead to the 14 minute mark if you don't want (or have time) to listen to Danny and I do a little pre-show riffing as we get ready to rock and roll. Thumbnail Image: Brooklyn, NY native and former NBA star, Stephon Marbury, playing with China's Beijing Ducks where he has become a cultural icon and nothing short of a rock star. Danny Haiphong and Nate Wallace have had enough of Outkick (the Coverage) spewing the most infantile brand of (pun intended) "American Exceptionalism and American Innocence," and the worst of it going unchecked in mainstream (politics and sports) media. These two clowns have built a mini-empire by drawing in every disaffected loser who feels like their safe space of sports fandom's been imploded by "woke athletes," "cancel culture," and an unholy amalgamation of athlete activism and what they truly believe to be a once upon a time pure sports world (i.e. only permitting displays of jingoism, militarism, copaganda like politics that these pea brains believe are patriotic not political), that's now tainted by the influence of what Jason Whitlock like to call "BLM: Bigots Love Marxism" HAHAHAHAHA. The show will focus on Outkick's laughably ahistorical claims regarding American Exceptionalism's role in the world; Travis claims that the U.S. has consistently made the world a better place by exporting "our values" (which to Travis is of course the typical abstract "freedom" we here from Beltway regime change fanatics). Travis seems to think we were merely helping the people of El Salvador, Guatemala, and Nicaragua by funding right-wing death squads and imposing on them totally undemocratic regimes. Travis believes Cuba was a bastion of freedom prior to Fidel Castro and the Cuban Revolution, despite the fact that 90% of the Cuban people they were illiterate, lacked any worker's rights, and were wretchedly exploited for the benefit of U.S. imperialism's profits (especially organized crime's profits who ran the show at Havana's casinos). Travis is so misinformed (perhaps deliberately since telling the truth would mean undermining his entrenched class-interests). Worst of all of this is Trump, Travis, and Whitlock's obsession with demonizing the People's Republic of China, as their hypocrisy on so many levels is utterly astounding, even for these three! We will go into much greater detail, and certainly won't forget to roast Jason Whitlock's shameful transformation from respectable journalist who at least pretended to care about issues of race and social justice, to becoming the black man Donald Trump and Clay Travis rely on to back-up the (at least in their minds) grant legitimacy to their awful takes on "American Exceptionalism and American Innocence," athlete activism, militarism, jingoism, and the posthumous character assassinations of the black victims of fatal (or in Jacob Blake's case life-altering) police shootings. Lastly, you don't want to miss our riff on Clay Travis hilariously citing Trump's moving the U.S. embassy to Israel from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem as a reason why everyday Americans should throw their support behind him -although to be fair it's not as if Biden will do anything to reverse Trump's outrageously criminal decision. if you enjoy the content, please consider supporting our work on Patreon so we can produce more of it. The coaches are from L to R: current Lee head coach (at the time assistant) & Florida Gators star receiver from 2000-2004: OJ Small, then head coach and former star Florida Gators bandit back (hybrid linebacker/safety position) from 1988-1992: Myrick Anderson, and finally yours truly clapping it up on the right. 34:36Nate Wallace hosts Part I of a Redspin Sports series looking into unchecked right-wing sports narratives; particularly the lunacy coming out out of Outkick the Coverage's Clay Travis and Jason Whitlock at a staggering pace. This includes the relationship between President Trump's White House and his sports world influence operation; masquerading as a beacon of reason for the fan craving "apolitical" (they mean right-wing) sports coverage, amid a landscape of "overly emotional," "BLM-loving" "woke sports journos." Amazingly, the purveyors of hyper-political trash (i.e. Clay Travis and Jason Whitlock at "Outkick the Coverage") present their "Outkick" platform as a safe-haven for the sports fan who's fed up with "all this politics and sports mixing" (translation: they're really saying they're fed up with the Great Satan -aka Colin Kaepernick). The utter absurdity of this position collapses upon a minefield of contradictions. These fans (nor Travis or Whitlock) have no issue with politics and sports so long as it's the politics of American exceptionalism, or uncritical adoration of U.S. militarism -regardless of the facts they claim to pursue so objectively given their unwavering commitment to "journalistic integrity." I can go on and on, but it's all in the video so check it out! If you enjoy the content, please consider supporting our work on Patreon so we can produce more of it. 1:24:32Part discussion, part interview, Nate Wallace & Mike Serazio hit on a compelling mix of contemporary issues that relate to topics he writes about in his book, and an illuminating deep dive into the book itself. If you want to better understand why (love them or hate them) sports are so powerful in U.S. society, you''re going to want to check out this episode. Michael Serazio is an associate professor in the Department of Communication at Boston College. His research and teaching focuses on media production, advertising, popular culture, political communication, and new media. His latest book is The Power of Sports: Media and Spectacle in American Culture (available from NYU Press). A behind-the-scenes investigation that draws upon dozens of interviews with leaders and professionals in the media business, "The Power of Sports" provocatively analyzes how sports culture explains and reflects contemporary American life – from journalism to politics to commercialism to gender. Professor Serazio received his Ph.D. from the University of Pennsylvania’s Annenberg School for Communication, where he won the National Communication Association’s Outstanding Doctoral Dissertation Award. He also holds a B.A. in Communication from the University of San Francisco and an M.S. in Journalism from Columbia University. A former staff writer for the Houston Press, an alternative newsweekly, his reporting was recognized as a finalist for the Livingston Awards and he has continued to write essays on media and culture for The Atlantic, The Washington Post, The Wall Street Journal, The New Republic, The Nation, Bloomberg, and Salon. A native San Diegan, Mike enjoys rooting (often frustratingly) for the Padres and Chargers, and, above all, spending time with his wife and daughter.
