There is increasing evidence that economic criminals operate under the radar of crime prevention measures and outside of the mainstay of law enforcement activity. In some countries at least (and the UK is an example) the majority of crime is fraud (and related offences). Offenders say different types of economic crime are easy to commit, unlikely to pursued by authorities, and so the chances of avoiding capture are high, and moreover this is lucrative. Is this situation true? How can we begin to think differently about these offences, and how do we get an appropriate focus?
The purpose of this webinar is to discuss:
- Why is economic crime so high?
- What are the gaps in the broad preventive approach that need to be plugged?
- What factors will trigger an improved response?
Panellists:
Richard Hyde - Senior Researcher, Social Market Foundation
Sandra Peaston - Director of Research and Development, Cifas
Rian Matanky-Becker - Head of Economic Crime Policy and Engagement, HMRC
