Motorcyclists remain an exception to the overall decline in U.S. highway fatalities, according to recent data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). In the first half of 2024, motor vehicle fatalities dropped by 3.2% compared to 2023, with declines across almost all categories, including pedestrians, bicyclists, and passenger vehicle occupants. However, motorcyclist fatalities rose by 1%, standing out as a rare increase alongside a similar rise for individuals over 65. This reflects a long-term trend where fatalities among motorcyclists, bicyclists, and pedestrians constitute a growing proportion of overall traffic deaths, while fatalities for occupants of cars and trucks decline.

However, motorcycles, even with advanced features, remain inherently less protective in crashes. While some motorcyclists point to distracted drivers as a major cause, self-inflicted risks also play a significant role. Nearly half of fatal motorcycle crashes are single-vehicle incidents, and about 25% involve alcohol, underscoring the importance of rider responsibility in reducing fatalities.
