The Hungry Ghost Festival, also known as the Zhongyuan Festival in Taoism or the Yulanpen Festival in Buddhism, is a traditional festival held in certain East and Southeast Asian countries. According to the Chinese Lunar Calendar, the Hungry Ghost Festival is generally on the 15th night of the seventh month. In 2023, the festival fell on August 30th; in 2024, the festival will fall on August 18th. In Chinese culture, the fifteenth day of the seventh month on the Lunar Calendar is "Ghost Day," and the seventh month is generally regarded as the "Ghost Month." During "Ghost Month," ghosts and spirits, including those of deceased ancestors, come up from the lower realm. During the Hungry Ghost Festival, the spirts of the deceased are believed to visit the living.
