The 2022 Matthew Simpson Lecture in Religion was an in-person event at Simpson for the first time since 2019, and Dartmouth's Randall Balmer came to speak on the origins of the rise of the Religious Right as a political force in America. Balmer argues that it wasn't abortion that provided the issue that galvanized evangelical leaders, but rather their desire to protect segregated private religious schools. Balmer is nationally known for his research and expertise on the Religious Right in America.
